Pros

If your going to work in academic research you are going to be poor so it helps to live somewhere with a low cost of living - Rochester NY is one such place - this is a major plus working at the University of Rochester and should be emphasized when the UofR goes recruiting . I had an opportunity to work go to work at Yale but could not afford to take the position as I could not support my family in New Haven on the pay I was offered. Besides being affordable Rochester is also an excellent place for families. Concerning the University of Rochester - at least in my old field of brain science the research community is extensive and strong and facilities are generally good.

Cons

It is probably not unique to the U of R but I get the feeling that non-tenure track researchers are considered expendable resources. Support is completely random - if you have a principle investigator who backs you up, great, other wise you are on your own. Ultimately, I don't really feel I worked for the U of R but rather that the U of R was my landlord and that I worked for the NIH who provided my funding.

Pros

Not a lot of work gets done so if you like being lazy its pretty good. Ok benefits and good work schedule flexibility and time off.

Cons

Horrible pay, horrible opportunities for advancement. People are entrenched in their jobs and don't like change. A lot of inept employees/management.
