Big Bureaucracy with no advancements after your hire

Pros

Great benefits package for health and personal education. 403B is a good plus as well.

Cons

What they do not tell you is once you are hired into a position, no matter how well you do you must wait a minimum of 2 years for promotion eligibility. If you desire to transfer to another department in the same position, there is no wage adjustment allowed. You do more work for the same pay. There is no budget for training or personal development to position you for a promotion either. Poor cross-departmental relationships. Recent lay-offs, hiring freeze, and salary freeze are discouraging.

Pros

Great flexibility, excellent pay especially as you climb the ranks, recognition of boss and co-workers when jobs completed well and on time, stress free, no competition, excellent benefits, work for a top tier university, great if pursuing education as future career, opportunity for various travel experiences depending on what sector you work for

Cons

There are times when there may not seem like much to do, but if you are independent and a hard worker, you will find things to accomplish. Not everything is "spoon fed" to you which may or may not be a downside to working there. Not much else

Pros

Great culture for promoting personal growth. The University fosters a philosophy that allows staff to continue their education and evolve their skills. It sits in a community where family is important and family obligations are respected. The freedom to manage our time is valued by me and most of my peers.

Cons

Very staid and slow to change. The University has trouble taking risks. Its culture is somewhat insular and failures, even quite small ones, are strictly avoided. This slows growth to a crawl and stifles creativity and advancement in technology. Unfortunately, this is cultural and not necessarily connected to individual leaders.
