Pros

Some of the doctors are excellent/ amazing and great to work with. They were always willing to discuss cases and answer questions.

Cons

Techs are underappreciated and under utilized. There is a yearly changing of the intern doctors that causes lots of stress, and the training/teaching moments are mostly directed to them and the techs fall by the wayside. No effort is made to elevate them or to improve working conditions for them. Turnover is ridiculously high and techs are stretched to continuously train new assistants that frequently have little experience. Management has demonstrated over and over that technicians are not a high priority . There is definitely a clique mentality and rewards are given to those who tow the party line, not for merit. Christmas bonuses don't exist, and the 'gold star' bonus system relies on favoritism. If you want to learn knew things as an RVT, be prepared to hit a ceiling on what opportunities exist. And also learn to like having way too many tech supervisors and arbitrary rules that do not make for a good work environment, such as being required to take lunch as early as 10am if you start at 7am. I don't know how many times I had to stay late to get all my work done and , instead of being thanked for my dedication, I was reminded that overtime was frowned upon. Um, you're welcome?

Pros

The hospital I work in is great and the corporate offices I've dealt with have always been good to work with. I feel like a part of something good. Benefits are good and I have the ability to move up and a lot of great opportunities to learn and grow.

Cons

I do feel sometimes that the higher ups make more than they should and do not compensate the actual hospital workers for all the revenue we bring them. We do get some perks but even when revenue goes up, staffing still does not match what we produce in my opinion. Corporate workers seem to get better pay and perks than hospital workers.

Pros

There are a lot of wonderful people working at the West LA location. They have a newer hospital administrator who cares, but they ask too much of her. She can't fix everything that has been neglected at this hospital for years.

Cons

The hospital itself is a mess. There is no accountability among techs, they just throw people on the floor with no training, and there is not really any oversight. They use a system called smartflow but don't have the internet capability to handle it and it has caused patients to be accidentally overdosed on medication because it doesn't update well. It's also stopped working when dealing with critical cases, jeopardising the patient. Management has been told numerous times about the danger but does not do anything except say we have to use it. No contingency plan. There are a lot of interns, again, not a lot of oversight so not only are you taking care of your patients, but trying to help interns do their jobs. Owners pay the same fee for intern vs getting an experienced ER doc. If a pet comes in overnight after 2:30am, it's an intern basically on their own handling critical cases. There is no communication between departments and owners get frustrated a lot. Also, the West LA location is very expensive compared to other VCA locations. Most employees I've talked to would not trust have their own pets hospitalised here. They can't hold on to staff, but never offer anything till an employee threatens to quit.
