Pros

Schedule flexibility, great Co workers, great mission statement, commitment to excellent medicine. Great pet discount.

Cons

Low salaries, little to no acknowledgement from middle / upper management of staff that go above and beyond. Nepotism runs rampant leading to hiring and promoting of family and friends as opposed to qualified proven long term loyal employees which leads to excessive amounts of frustration, under appreciation and ultimately turnover. No standards or continuity in pay, completely random and at the discretion of management and what they can get "approved". People (staff) love their home Hospital and ultimately leave the company frustrated that they love it and work harder at making it succeed than the regional managers they answer to. Finally, when long-term loyal committed staff do decide to leave VCA, instead of questioning why and trying to minimize the loss of these employees VCA could literally care less a very very poor attitude to have in this day in age.

Pros

company draws a lot of talented passionate people who are amazing to work with, offers an excellent pet care discount, provides high caliber veterinary care, offices everywhere which opens possibility of transfer while staying in "The VCA Family" and maintaining benefits, 401k, etc, CE reimbursement, great place to gain hands-on experience in the veterinary field with people at the top of their game, VCA offers limited yearly scholarships to staff members who wish to pursue becoming RVT's

Cons

too much corporate politics crushes the spirit of staff on front lines of pet care, more emphasis on quantity than Quality (perhaps this is just the nature of the inflexible corporate beast vs the more adaptable independent hospital vibe), in-house management is often crippled by trickle-down corporate barking, expensive benefits that aren't affordable on the wages of most employees, VCA just got phagocytized by Mars Inc which will likely make everything even worse, wages could definitely be better considering the magnitude of this company, ridiculously high turnover rates

Pros

Each hospital can practice their own style. No cookie-cutter medicine

Cons

Negative accrual is a joke. Basically end up in the hole if taking time off so no real PTO. Limited opportunities to advance beyond an associate if not board certified or in good graces of higher-ups
