Pros

Pay was competitive and benefits were good. 3 days of bereavement leave including for pets was great. Ability to bring my quiet well behaved dog to work with me was wonderful as I am single. Diversity in my hospital was pretty reflective of our community in terms of support staff, though not vets. A lot of the culture is good. Some of the best doctors and support staff I've ever worked with.

Cons

Tolerance for bullying by certain "favorite" staff members. Clique-y. Lack of clear communication regarding expectations (I am autistic - perhaps someone allistic would have struggled less but poor communication is poor communication). Did not respect my skill level or experience and only focused on what I need more experience with. Training and development started strong and then dropped off to nothing. Was told I was inconveniencing my team and they were growing to resent me because I suffered an injury on the job that required me to take medical leave.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for the care you brought to VEG during your time with us—we truly appreciate it. We’re genuinely sorry to hear you felt unsupported and not respected by your team; this is really concerning and does not reflect the experience we strive to create. Even though you’ve moved on, if you’re open to sharing more so we can learn from this and help ensure others don’t have a similar experience, we welcome you to reach out to stephaniedemars@veg.vet. .

Pros

•Only three 12-hour shifts per week, allowing for a better work-life balance. •Strong growth opportunities—learning is encouraged both on the floor and through the VEG Cultivate Program. •Unlimited continuing education (CE), with an annual stipend to cover travel expenses. •Employee discounts available for personal pet care. •Generous annual uniform allowance. •Annual allowance for VEG Shop purchases. •Hospital provides a variety of snacks for both staff and clients. •Nursing Credential Support Program helps cover the cost of tuition for veterinary nursing school, VTNE prep materials, exam fees, and state credentialing fees.

Cons

•Health insurance is expensive, especially for decent coverage or adding dependents. •Lack of support and follow-through from management on staff concerns. •The hospital has been without a permanent nursing manager for several months, which has impacted leadership and team coordination. •We’ve also been without a dedicated hospital manager—currently, someone from another location is filling in, but it’s difficult for her to effectively support two busy hospitals at once. •Hardworking employees who contribute positively to the work culture often go unrecognized. •There is a lack of accountability—employees who underperform or negatively impact the team are rarely held responsible, and even when issues are addressed, no meaningful changes are made. •It’s difficult to trade shifts or get coverage due to minimal staffing.
