      A good place to work, but "good old boy (girl)" network powers upper management

      Pros

      Satisfying career caring for people who really need help, with very reasonable support from the company for supplies and medicines. No one was ever deprived of anything needed for symptom control, and even most "nice to have for comfort" supplies and assignments were approved.

      Cons

      Knee-jerk reactions to company stresses such as memos from headquarters or a decline in census. Power for any change was in the hands of the people who were in the program when it started, regardless of their current position or authority.

      Pros

      You can make a difference in the lives of patients and families. Rewarding to improve the quality of life during tough times. Better care and respect for clients than rest of medical community. Best pain control for the dying.

      Cons

      Only nurses have opportunity for career advancement. Inconsistent appreciation of staff. Management is often disrespectful of those who actually provide the care. Leadership skills are lacking in most management.
