Great people, no leadership or communication

Pros

Lots of really smart people and a business environment that is superficially "fun".

Cons

No direct feedback. Employees terminated without reason or cause. Ego-driven leadership with no tolerance for criticism. The culture is centered around alcohol, which may or may not be your thing.

Cool company doing cool things

Pros

Social events, beer Fridays, 4 weeks vacation, good downtown location, fun team, smart people. VendAsta is a cool company doing cool things. They are helping grow the Saskatoon tech scene so that's great. The company is also growing quickly too and where so many others are stagnant or shrinking, growth is a good thing!

Cons

Parking downtown can be a pain. The office is in an older building so we have to deal with some old building heat & a/c issues, but mgmt tries to keep battling that.

Pros

Free beer and food on Fridays.

Cons

The salaries are ok but you'll never get a raise only an increased workload.

Hi, this is Jason Collins, CTO at Vendasta! Thanks for the feedback! Though I didn't realize we ever wore suits. For sure Vendasta is transitioning from startup to an excellent operating company. Part of the excitement of a startup is having a lot of visibility and input across a flat organization and discovering the processes and structures that work best. We've always worked hard to provide an environment that encourages experimentation and discovery and looked for ideas and innovation to flow from all staff, not from a top-down hierarchy. It is true that as we make this transition we need to formalize our career path, and this is work we are very active on. We want our career path, and its implication to your own personal achievement, to be very clear and transparent. That said, the career path we are structuring is not about hierarchy and power. For example, we believe that the worst thing you can do is take a super-awesome software developer and make them a manager of people. The skill sets involved are utterly different and 9 times out of 10, you will completely drive the passion out of that individual. As we develop our career path, we want to ensure that people can continue to advance their personal achievement by exercising the skills they excel at and are most passionate about. And hey, if becoming a people manager is something that sounds awesome to you and you have the skills for the job, we will probably be able to provide that. Just don't feel that's the step you need to take in order to advance at Vendasta. Hope this helps, Jason
