Pros

Access to labs and equipment

Cons

Where to begin? Entitled students, backstabbing coworkers, fraudalant and exploitive bosses. You will not ever get promoted or get raises unless you pander to both your students AND bosses. This place is pure politics, so if you enjoy being abused by students, coworkers and program directors, go for it. They will move the goal post and change school policy when it suits them. There are teachers making less than half of what professors make and teaching twice the number of classes. The abuse of adjuncts continues unabated. Anyone who goes to HR about these problems doesn't keep their job.

No way to advance my career at VCU

Pros

Health insurance isn't too expensive

Cons

Impossible to get another job at VCU if you already work here as they require 3 contacts including your most recent supervisor. So if you work in an office that does not have a lot of staff members, they will all know you are looking for another job due to this rule. Pay is well below market rate especially for coordinator positions. PTO is grouped together so there is no separate sick leave, bereavement leave does not exist. My office is so short-staffed I can't take off work to utilize the only benefit worth working here for.

Pros

After the pandemic, I was able to work hybrid.

Cons

There's a reason why VCU has such a high turnover rate. They do not give raises nor promote internally.
