- Toxic & competitive work culture - Wayfair has a forced, stack rank policy where managers are required to rank every employee at a given level within a team. There are quotas for how many people need to get each rating. This leads to a competitive and frankly, unfair, work environment where you feel like you constantly have to watch your back. As a manager of a large team, I found the "calibration" process to be a nightmare - on more than one occasion, I had to move employees from "meeting expectations" to "inconsistent performance" in order to meet quotas. To be sure, these employees WERE meeting expectations by any measure and had no real warning. It made delivering these reviews extremely uncomfortable and disheartening - I had to justify ratings I did not believe in. I've never had significant mental health issues before joining Wayfair and I had a complete mental breakdown requiring extensive psychiatric care. And I'm not the only one - I know at least a handful of others at my level who had a similar experience. It has taken me a few months since leaving to even write this review because of how horrible the culture was. I wish I had paid more attention to the Glassdoor ratings I'd seen before I accepted my offer as they are replete with mentions of a toxic culture
- Confusing / chaotic environment - in my two years at Wayfair, I had 5 different managers. If you ask around, you will find that this is not an uncommon experience. While you'd expect some degree of change in a growing company, it felt particularly chaotic and disorganized. Teams would get reorged over and over again, often multiple times in a year, and it led to a lot of frustration and confusion
- Questionably legal behavior- following my parental leave, my job was essentially erased. A new person was leading my team and I no longer had direct reports. Unfortunately, from talking around I know that this is not an isolated experience. Is this legal? Almost definitely not. I had already experienced so much trauma from this job that I personally chose not to fight it. I am now working at a higher level (L5) at a better tech company for more pay, so for me it was simply better to move on and re-focus my efforts. I really, really hope that other people - especially moms - will read this review and re-think an offer from Wayfair
