We need a management transfusion

Pros

Most of the reviews have covered the pros. We have a great office with lots of steel and glass. The location on centennial campus is great. The cafe is nice with the obligatory free snacks and soft drinks. The culture is relaxed with a casual work pace.

Cons

Many of the reviews on this site trend toward a theme: poor leadership and management. That is the principal drawback at WebAssign. We employee a diverse group of talented individuals. But we lack an executive team that can lead them. The problem starts at the top. Our founder departed several years ago, and although he had no experience running a company, he inspired confidence and drove us to succeed. Since his departure, we lack leadership. We need a leader and an executive team that can inspire and lead.

WebAssign could be a great place to work with meaningful change

Pros

The company desires to help educators and students. We are located on the NCSU campus. Access to the greenway is a short walk. A career alternative to teaching. We get to learn perl and html. One-third of our employees are academics with advanced degrees in science and math.

Cons

The education industry has changed over the past decade and WebAssign is not keeping up. We have been too conservative in our approach to strategy and product development. Management problems have plagued the company for 3+ years and are still present. After the founder passed away several years ago, we lacked strong leadership that can craft a real strategic mission and vision, not just words on paper. We have many educators in the building but none of them are in senior leadership positions. (We love our CAO but he doesn’t count since he has no power to make changes.) Publishers are building similar content delivery systems and they will no longer need us in 5 years. We don’t have a plan B.

Pros

Casual, flexible environment. Great location. Reasonable work hours. Fairly collaborative culture.

Cons

Seemingly obvious problems in management that took forever to get fixed. Sounds like some of that has changed, so perhaps its gotten better.
