Pros

Great benefit package for employees and their families. Fantastic workplace close to all of the freeways. I have nothing but positive words to say regarding the agency. I like what WestEd stands for, the work that we do as a whole. I love that we are in compliance year after year with great leaders running the agency. I like that we make a difference.

Cons

Not enough hours in the day!

Thank you for your hard work with us, we are always happy to hear feedback from current employees! Thank you also for being a loyal employee for more than 10 years – you join the more than one-third of our current regular staff who are considered long-term staff members, all with an impressive 10+ years of service. Thank you for taking the time to write about us, and please feel free to bring up any concerns or compliments to your supervisor or the Human Resources Department. Our mission of supporting educators at all levels (local, city, county, state, district, and national) is rewarding and at times difficult, so thank you for your dedication to the work and to WestEd. I encourage you to make sure that you are taking time for yourself, away from work as well. Work-life balance is important!

Dedicated staff; mission-driven agency

Pros

Passionate, dedicated staff; mission-driven agency doing important work; solid benefits and good vacation and sick time; smart, interesting colleagues; a wide variety of work going on in offices across the country -- so there can be opportunities to move to different programs/projects. In my experience, people here treat their colleagues with respect and most staff are very dedicated to their jobs and the mission of the agency (improving education outcomes in the U.S.).

Cons

Not always the most social atmosphere, as a lot of staff are academics who are somewhat introverted (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but might be for certain personality types); funding can be an issue, as projects need to seek various funding sources for their work; headquarters are in San Francisco, but we're likely not as "modern" as many of the tech startups (which also isn't necessarily a bad thing, but may be for certain personality types).

Thank you for your review, and thank you also for your long tenure here at WestEd! We always appreciate hearing from current employees. I would certainly agree that intelligence, respect, and dedication are hallmarks of WestEd employees. I appreciate your individual experience of the socialization level and modernity here, though I would like to refer you to our allocated budget for each office location set aside for social activities each year. There is a large diversity of work, multiple projects and programs across more than a dozen different office locations, as well as a significant percentage of our employee base who are remote workers, so one person’s employee experience may differ widely from another’s. Thanks again for taking the time to write a review – you are encouraged to bring up any concerns, compliments or suggestions to Glen Harvey directly, to your supervisor or to the Human Resources Department.

Pros

WestEd is a very solid organization and for the most part a good place to work. They offer good benefits and decent work-life balance

Cons

The organization is funded on a soft money basis, so you have to constantly bring in new business in order to keep your job.

Thanks for your feedback. Our high agency standards combined with many of our employees’ high individual standards makes work-life balance critical. We certainly appreciate the importance of a clear and stated work-life balance as one of the cornerstones of a productive workforce. It is certainly true that as a non-profit the majority of our funding comes from grants and projects, which WestEd seeks out and applies for. There is a trade-off in the areas in which we work between having a large variety of work options and projects available, and having a steady stream of one kind of work only. By choosing to diversify, we create a need for ongoing funding. This is the nature of non-profits, research agencies and education providers in many organizations across the United States, and WestEd is no different in that respect. Where we do set ourselves apart is our determination to be a “best in class” agency that serves a vast and diverse client base in nearly every state. Thank you for your work while with WestEd.
