Perfect if you want Stability over Salary

Pros

Company loyalty including many benefits options, very few cubicles, on-site subsidized cafeteria and fitness center, and fairly low-stress. More of an academic environment than a corporate environment in some ways -- opportunities to share ideas and work on multiple projects and areas. Employee-owned 'old-school' perks like holiday parties and company picnic.

Cons

Very few standard procedures that are not implemented across the company, resulting in unfair practices in some areas, for example minimal pay increases depending on which group you're in so you can't move up. Top-heavy with associate directors and VPs, many of which no one knows what they do and many don't even come in to work, some are even "retired". It's nearly impossible in some groups to get demoted or let go so there's a lot of dead wood. There's a lot of nepotism and those people do not have to improve their skills, carry their weight, or in some cases even behave professionally. Very few holidays (6) and vacation days.

Pros

Very difficult to get fired here if you perform your job at the minimum requirement. Job security is nice and the vacation time is very flexible. Overall great people to work with and if you need experience it's a nice place to start out. Many people leave and come back. Largely because I think they know the only way to get paid more us to show another company was willing to pay.

Cons

The pay for entry to mid level professionals is not competitive. You will be significantly underpaid and undervalued. I performed mid level and project manager level tasks but was still classified as entry level after 5 years with the company. There is zero room for growth. I've known people hired as an entry level research assistant and after 8 years were still classified technically as entry level. If you need research experience get in and get out after 2 years. Also, there was a lack of diversity among management staff. The management staff is excellent overall but all white faces. The company is still trapped in 1989. Mostly older white men in senior positions, a few women and virtually no minorities.

Place for stagnation

Pros

Depending on manager and group but mostly relaxed, employee-friendly, family-friendly, flexible, good work-life balance environment. Strong job security and stability until recently when things have changed somewhat due to poor business performance. Still, tendency to retain staff for a long time - you can spend your life here. Variety of topics and areas to work. Fluid boundaries between groups so many opportunities to work in different areas if you have the initiative. Private offices, nice cafeteria, and on-site gym. Most people are basically nice people.

Cons

Bureaucratic, old-fashioned, conservative, technologically behind, and overall mediocre quality and standards. Patronage based system - opportunities, participation in initiatives, growth, promotions, recognition, good reimbursements - all happens only if you have patronage of a senior influential manager. Otherwise, you can stagnate all your life here in a snail-track. No mentoring of staff. 70% of employees are women but very large majority of senior leadership and the board is men and White. Some abusive senior managers get away with anything. HR not very supportive.
