Pros

Very flexible work environment. You really are in control of your own career at Westinghouse. The employees and direct supervision are all very friendly and easy to work with.

Cons

The requirement to charge a network and activity for 85% or greater of your time becomes frustrating after a very short period of time (if you are not "productive", you can not be considered for a merit raise - if you take your vacation and holidays, you are already only 90% productive). There is quite a bit of work that needs to be done, but it often does not accompany an active project. The company as a whole is a little top heavy - far too much emphasis on project management, and not enough emphasis on technical management. The business leaders don't seem to have a good understanding that the customers must be satisified. There is a great tendency in the organization to blame the customer when a deliverable is found to be deficient. There is concern among some of the working level that cuts may be necessary if the economy does not recover or the government does not provide money to the industry for new construction. There is also division between the engineers and technicians in benefits provided. Non-degreed positions get less vacation and pay more for the insurance benefits. It promotes a class system. Also, the winning performance bonus will no longer be given after 2009 because the company recognizes there are not enough profits to award the workers with a bonus and cover the overhead associated with Customer 1st and the New Reactors organization.

Pros

Westinghouse offers a good starting pay to new grads. The work environment is relaxed and generally enjoyable. The nuclear industry is quickly growing and not showing signs of being hurt by the recession. New hires start with 16 vacation days.

Cons

The raise schedule may not be up to par. Experienced hires receive work much quicker than new grads, along with much higher pay, although their experience may not even be relevant to their position. I find myself being much more competent than some experienced hires as the line of work is somewhat unique and requires training for anyone coming from another company. Most work simply requires becoming proficient in certain software packages and with company policies and procedures. Benefits are no where near as good as those offered by other engineering companies. Health plans offered are sub-par, and 401k match is only 50% of contributions.
