Pros

WillowTree is an incredibly inclusive company to work for. The projects we work on are incredible and provide value to millions of people around the world. The pay is in line with the standards, the benefits are great, and most importantly they TRULY value your work-life balance.

Cons

The only con I have for this is how Remote employees are treated. Often remote employees are overlooked for any engagement with the company. The company has shifted to a mindset of "Hybrid" but the President himself has admittedly despised the very idea of remote. The company tries to offset this by having WFA groups to connect with remote employees, but the big problem isn't the connection, it's the disconnect. In my tenure here, being remote, I've been moved around to new projects more frequently than my on-site counterparts. "Remote" to WillowTree is merely a bandaid for gushing wounds. They have recently taken to flat out no longer hiring remote employees only in egregious circumstances. I guess the thought is "Remote Employees are Lazy" despite me having demonstratable proof to the counter.

Pros

- you will learn a lot (partly due to the fact that you will likely be thrown into the deep end with little to no support from the management) - modern tech stack and interesting projects/clients (varies from project to project) - cool offices and nice swag - great opportunities to learn from your colleagues via knowledge sharing sessions and mentorship - good benefits and perks at the time when I worked there (affordable medical insurance with good coverage, flexible time off policy, professional education budget, office parties) - the COVID situation was handled well (no layoffs happened, the leadership was transparent about their plan and they even gave up their pay for a period of time) In general, if you end up at this company, my recommendation is to learn as much you can and pursue other opportunities at companies with better pay and a better culture/ work-life balance.

Cons

- toxic management + the culture of constant feedback and performance reviews will make you feel like you are never good enough, no matter how hard you try. Management will set expectations and make promises, but when you meet the agreed upon goals and expectations, they will not honor their promises and will give you a new set of expectations to meet. They will gaslight you by saying that you are not good enough for the promotion even when you exceed the expectations. And even if you get a supportive manager, they are at the mercy of the VP above them who gets to make all the decisions. - lack of diversity. if you are not a young white American-born male, you will likely feel that you don't fit in. If you don't match the above profile, you will most likely be the only "different" person on your project's engineering team. - it's a cult. You are expected to give all of yourself for the sake of the client priorities. When you voice your concerns about being stressed out and overworked, you are told that this is the nature of the agency business model, or that your problem "doesn't exist", or that you "don't work hard enough".

Thanks for the kind notes on the quality of the team, the culture and the benefits. Am sorry to hear that you've had a tough time with the leadership of your group -- ultimately it is our job as managers/leaders to make sure the team is supported so we have clearly failed here. Our DEI journey is never ending, but from a pure statistics standpoint, we release our data every year and are very proud of the strides we've made -- here's our latest release: https://www.willowtreeapps.com/insights/we-believe-in-pay-equity - TD

Will C Suite Stop the Decline?

Pros

Some incredibly intelligent, empathetic people work here.

Cons

Since the acquisition, things have been going downhill. There was a jarring layoff despite C Suite boasting about never doing layoffs, even during COVID, and the way they went about doing it was traumatic. They've slowly been taking away perks, making remote people feel like they are less valuable, less intelligent, less worthy, and continue to disprove all of their core values. You want mentorship? Good luck, all of the senior level engineers are being tasked with ridiculous things and meetings with clients that are circular and endless. They do not teach anyone how to mentor, they do not teach management how to manage people, they just throw everyone in the water and hope they learn how to swim. You want psychological safety and open communication? Well you can give it, but you won't get it back. Sustainable flow? Good luck with hundreds of daily meetings. Ownership? They won't take ownership of what they do, but they'll happily steal ownership over things the individual contributor has done that made a big splash. Partnership? Inclusion? If you're a minority, prepare to deal with a lot of microaggressions and get nothing done when you go to HR. Look at the ratings chart, this company has taken a serious nose dive. They are so unfocused and trying to get into voice or AI or whatever trend they want and are dividing the company further. They are losing some seriously great talent because of underpaying, overworking, and lying through their teeth.

Thank you for the note and acknowledging the incredible folks we have here. I know everyone has been extraordinarily frustrated by the layoffs we had to do in May driven by the changes in the market. I also understand the timing of those vis-a-vis our acquisition but can assure you those are unrelated -- TI has been nothing but supportive, and no one could have foreseen the depth of the pullback in tech and consulting as companies cut $billions in spending and 100s of thousands of positions. I am also aligned with your thoughts of of "go back to the way things were" and we are working on that every day primarily by working with our amazing teams and clients to ensure a steady increase in projects, and where we have made great progress....
