Pros

People are friendly to work with and in right position can obtain great experience. Work-life balance is acceptable at times.

Cons

Poor benefits and the management has excessive focus on equity profits. There is little concern for human capital. Mobility is also very poor.

Pros

I've worked for law firms since 1987. I have to say that Wilson Elser (WE) has hands-down been my favorite employer. Here's why: 1. Managing Partner in SF: He's not only an excellent attorney but he's also an excellent manager. He is patient, reasonable, kind, and very supportive. He's also very personable and treats the entire staff as equals. He voluntarily sits in on my administrative meetings and engages with the staff. His positive attitude and demeanor is refreshing. He's very well liked by the attorney and admin staff. Our office is successful because of his influence and direction. 2. Attorneys & Professionals: The attorneys are very respectful and kind to each other and to the admin staff. Several staff members have reported extreme satisfaction working at Wilson Elser. They enjoy working with attorneys who support and respect them. The finance/HR departments are reliable, informative and accommodating. Their loyalty to the firm is impressive. I will retire from WE.

Cons

I would have liked to work for WE much earlier in my career. It would have saved me years of dissatisfaction and disappointment.

Pros

Great company perks and benefits.

Cons

As an office assistant, I expected that my work would be varied and reliant upon the needs of my attorneys' current caseload. But most of my work revolved around managing the travel plans and research for one attorney, who was already assigned a legal assistant and paralegal. All the work I did for her was considered "extracurricular," i.e. not related to any case for the firm. Everyone knew this, and largely gave the attorney free reign to use company resources for her personal projects. It made me uncomfortable that she didn't really seem to answer to anyone regarding this. They then decided to start training me to do another legal assistant's job, on top of the myriad of extracurricular items for this one "problematic" attorney. I was frequently tugged in multiple directions by different attorneys, but expected to prioritize the "extracurricular" work. It was very odd, and there were no clear boundaries or expectations explained or asserted for this role. I would caution anyone looking at these kinds of roles to look into the attorneys they'll be working for, and to demand clarity about the job duties for this role. I would have stayed with this company if the attorneys were better managed.
