"The Great Resignation"

Pros

Great people work here. My group is fantastic.

Cons

The great resignation is real. Xcel doesn't seem to care how many people move on. A friend/co-worker of mine who's been here over 10+ years is leaving. His manager doesn't care. I know of at least half a dozen people actively looking to leave the company. Most of them long-term employees. It's sad so many long-term folks are leaving and what's even sadder is the lack of concern from company leaders. Management talks a good talk about employees and caring but actions don't match the words.

Fewer employees doing more work

Pros

Friendly colleagues who oftentimes want the best for the company and their team. Customer-focused environment. There’s a culture of community and giving.

Cons

This company is going through a transition. While there are more customers than in the past, there has not been an equal increase in revenue due to energy efficiency initiatives and other factors. As a result, Xcel is being conservative with compensation and is not creating new full time roles to adjust for the new workload. Instead, corporate is relying more and more on contractors and/or giving more work to its existing employees. As a result, it’s hard for contractors and interns to move into full time roles, and the full time employees are getting burnt out by the extra workload. To make matters worse, new systems are purchased “off the shelf” instead of being customized to the business. As a result, the systems don’t communicate with each other which creates the need for manual processes to be used. This bogs down employees with extra work and often creates confusion and communication issues between departments.

Big Company - Typical Issues

Pros

Relatively good benefits with pension. Huge company with lots of opportunity for growth. Good experience for resume. Once you're in, it's likely you'll be able to stay here for as long as you wish. There are many employees with 25+ years with the company. It's a regulated utility so chances are, the company isn't going anywhere.

Cons

Typical corporate issues - they're always trying to save money by cutting out things that are important to employees like incentives, giving the only option for high deductible health care, not paying for family/spouses to be on health care, etc. A lot of positions are being outsourced to contractors. In some departments, it's hard to move around because a lot of favoritism exists. And of course, if you didn't already know, nepotism is huge in this company. And finally, a lot of retirements are happening and the company isn't replacing those individuals. Instead, they're expecting the current workforce to handle the extra workload, expecting as many hours as it takes to get the work done, and they have no focus on live/work balance whatsoever.
