Pros

Engineers are really helpful and awesome. Haven't met one that wasn't super nice and willing to take time out of their day to help you out. Nice friendly culture. Work Life balance is good. Plenty of people working odd hours, picking up kids, start/finish when it suits you. Not too much pressure to deliver, never had a need to work late at night. Remote working is generally the norm since Covid with one office day a week.

Cons

The management, HR side, etc seem like they don't fit in much with the rest of Xero's culture, probably due to coming from corporate or contracting firm style backgrounds. Middle management is bloated and lots of focus on BS things. They go on about Xero values all the time but don't seem to live by them. Not too bad if you keep your head down and avoid dealing with that side too much.

Pros

Good perks trickle down from Wellington. Looks good on your CV. Cool office. Strong company performance.

Cons

Canberra management is unable to effectively manage projects. Terrible legacy code base with awful amounts of unnecessary complexity leading to a frustrating work environment. Lack of planning leads to a culture of frequent crunch and insane stress. Canberra is a satellite office where you are treated as a second class citizen in the organisation. Very few career opportunities within the Canberra office.

Pros

- salary is above market rate - smart people to work with - no hidden agendas - flexible agile / lean deliverables. - Nice perks - Initially felt like a startup culture with flat structure but now its turning into a traditional evil corp.

Cons

- Mediocre middle management who dont know anything technical and engineering, and even strategy - so what is their solution? Hire more people and let them decide what it will look like - Selective career growth - sometimes, its all up to luck - Too much customisation on internal tooling that there are heaps of people maintaining them (Building your own tools actually expensive - it costs extra overheads to maintain them)
