Politics will kill Xero

Pros

The people are wonderful and the company has a great vision and great design. Rod carries the company forward beyond a lot of antiquated practices of tech companies in NZ and AU. Has a great chance of becoming the global accounting system most businesses will choose.

Cons

With HQ in NZ, most product work happening in AU, and forward operating offices in UK and US, there is a lack of communication and an air of animosity from those in the "mothership" region of NZ and AU. If you work in the US and try to get cooperation from your counterparts in NZ and AU, they are probably ignoring you, being snarky, and wondering why Xero is paying some idiot in the US who clearly doesn't know what they're doing. This is because in the NZ - AU region Xero has exploded and employees there have a huge sense of self importance. Meanwhile in the US Xero must strive to act as a startup and meet this market's needs with agility. The pattern is that the company keeps firing it's US teams for not delivering results while the root of the issue is that the teams in NZ and AU don't want to put any work into what will win the U.S. market. Classic innovators dilemma to reinvest in your big growing market, and let the much bigger, harder to crack market, languish. This is why I titled this review "Politics will kill Xero". If Xero can't figure this out they may not make headway in the U.S. and some other upstart will do the work necessary to win the U.S. There is no shortage of people ready to try.

Needs some maturity

Pros

Xero has some of the smartest people you will work with and you will also get your hands dirty with new technology. I definitely got to push my technical boundaries with this job and will value the experience I gained there. Xero also genuinely cares about its employees. They make great effort in managing work/life balance and providing tangible benefits to working for the company. This is a rarity in a tech company and one Xero should be praised for.

Cons

Xero is a company that acts like a teenager: They want to play with the big kids, but they lack the maturity and discipline to do so. This is most evidence by the disconnect from the Wellington HQ and other offices around the globe. Policies and processes hinge on HQ's involvement and, while they try to provide autonomy to other teams, this falls over as because a lot of work still needs to be approved by Wellington's oversight. This lack of maturity is also evidenced in the silo-ing that goes on from office to office. You'll find a tight culture in each office you visit, but there's a lack of connection between the different offices across the globe. This leads also to an imbalance of opportunity. Unless you're willing to move, you could quickly hit a wall depending on the kind of work being done in the office you get hired in.

Your comments certainly reflect the challenges of being such a fast growing global company. We don't always get it right but we firmly believe in learning from our experiences and some senior hires that we have made in recent months will be key in helping us mature in our organizational development

Pros

Free lunch once a week, that's about it. CEO Rod Drury has been great. Bottom level teammates that do the bulk of the actual work are mostly great people but unhappy with leadership.

Cons

Despite being a global company with over a million customers now and existing for 12 years they try to pass themselves off as a hip young startup, they are nothing of the sort. Company culture and morale in the Denver office has taken a noise dive the past 2 years, especially after the original CX manage left. Xero is beginning to feel like a corporate behemoth like Xerox. They're really big on promoting the company values, but don't actual adhere to them. Favoritism and nepotism are abound. If you're not part of the 'in' crowd don't expect any advancement ever. I've seen numerous people leave over the years due to this unfair and uncalled behavior. Moral on the floor is at an all time low the past few months. Lots of negative gossip happens everyday and get's people down. The 'Team Leads' in the customer service department are inexperienced and inept, it shows everyday. One in particular is on a bipolar emotional rollercoaster and makes me dread coming into work everyday. I've already been applying for employment elsewhere and hope to be gone soon. It was a great place when I started but the constant turnover and out of touch management has really ruined things. At this point it's just a boring repetitive office job and I don't see how it can be fixed. If you're looking for customer service/support related work in Denver I'd suggest you look elsewhere, there's plenty of better opportunities out there.

I’m very sorry to hear that this has been your experience working at Xero. If you haven’t already, I would strongly encourage you to speak with me or your PX Business Partner regarding the challenges you are facing on your team. We work hard to make sure that Xero is a place where employees feel included, empowered, and supported by teammates and management to do the best work of their lives, and that they are excited to come to work each day. -Bethany (Director of Customer Experience)
