You don’t want to know how the sausage is made

Pros

Great camp locations and great benefits (especially for a non-profit). Getting to see kids "birthed" each week was an amazing experience. Worked with some very creative people.

Cons

Ever heard the expression “You don’t want to know how the sausage is made”? Stay on the volunteer side of YL and you’ll keep your idealism. You’ll notice that very few of the reviews on this site related to the camping side of YL are positive. I worked full-time at more than one property and saw way too many unethical and self-serving financial decisions by managers as well as by field staff. It was an amazing place to be but when over 80% of my time & energy was spent dealing with “politics” and placating egos rather than taking care of guests/campers, I knew it was time to go.

Pros

The people in the organization are incredible. Have a sense of making a difference in the world.

Cons

Base salaries without a COLA are not competitive. The need to constantly raise money and grown in an organization that is supposed to be service orientated around helping the person right in front of you.

Pros

It was fulfilling reach the youth for the Gospel of Christ.

Cons

I gave four years of my life to Young Life as a WyldLife Coordinator. I showed up, worked hard, cared for kids, and did everything asked of me. But when it came to the end of my time there, I was treated like I didn’t matter. I wasn’t even given the chance to put in a two-week notice—my director told me when my last day would be, and after that, he never contacted me again. No thank you, no support, not even a simple check-in. I was suddenly jobless for four months with zero communication from the person who was supposed to lead and support me. It felt cold, unprofessional, and honestly heartbreaking after pouring so much into this ministry. The work with students is meaningful, but the way leadership treats staff made me feel completely unseen and disposable
