Steady decline in culture, product, and sanity

Pros

- Great PTO - Fun coworkers - Flexible working hours - Fun company events - Lots of beer (trust me, you will need it) If you have the right manager to protect you from the disorganized chaos of other teams or departments, Zapproved is a great place to work. Office managers do what they can to try and raise office morale.

Cons

- Generally poor and seemingly inexperienced management - Unreasonable deadlines - An expectation to work late nights and weekends to compensate for management's outrageous deadlines - Leadership is shaky and quick to cast blame, point fingers, and throw employees under the bus - Hemorrhaging of employees that are smart, talented, and trusted - Toxic working culture where no one trusts their job from one day to the next - Being critically underpaid is the status quo across departments to the degree that it is a frequent bitter in-joke amongst most employees - Employee hemorrhaging has led to losses of key team leaders, meaning that temporary replacements are requesting that work is constantly being redone and meetings are held redundantly on a daily basis - Employee dissatisfaction has turned a once fun office into a bitter, exhausted, paranoid office

First, thank you for your review. While I am not sure how to convey how saddened I am that this has been your experience at Zapproved, I am grateful for your honesty. I seek constant improvement for Zapproved and your input is valued and necessary. 3 years is a long time in the software life. I've only been here 2 years but looking back to where we were as a company as compared to where we are today leads me to believe you likely have made a huge impact in your role. Thank you. We're a company with tremendous ambition that pushes our limits every day. I won't deny that it pushes me personally. We're scaling across virtually every facet of our operation and that is only accelerating. But I also personally, deeply believe in a sustainable, joyous workplace that honors and supports the values and priorities we hold outside of work. I believe that you should be trusted to succeed, recognized and paid fairly for it, and supported by your leadership - all things that I know we strive to uphold as a company and on my team. While I can’t know if you are a part of the engineering organization based on your post, I do know you have not had an experience that reflects the values and environment that are important for me as a leader at Zapproved. This is something I would sincerely appreciate discussing with you. I encourage you to reach out. - Moses

Probably the worst tech company to work at in PDX

Pros

Nothing really, all the "pros" others post about you can get at any tech company across the US these days. And the benefits are far greater.

Cons

- Everyone who is good at their job and cares leaves because there is a never ending stream of false promises and lies. The people who stay, do so because they like that they can hide behind their bs power points and best practice speeches and pretty much get paid to do nothing while providing zero value. Those are also the people who get promoted into leadership positions. - Vista is out for one thing and one thing only: Money, which I totally get, but it comes at the cost of the employees. - The promise of raises and bonuses is a joke. It never happens because the leadership team has no idea how to properly forecast and pulls numbers out of thin air.

If you worked at Zapproved for more than 3 years then I know you were a major contributor to our current success and for that I am so appreciative. I am so sorry that you feel this bad looking back on your experience. No former (or current) Zapprovian should ever feel that way. I am always available for coffee or a chat if it helps you process things. Please reach out - I would be happy to help if I can.

Not engineer friendly

Pros

- Plenty of snacks, coffee and carbonated water - Weekly catered Monday lunch - Decent 401(k) with employer match

Cons

- Inexperienced leaders are promoted from within. Frequent political drama and backstabbing leads to highly toxic work environment. - Engineers treated as second class citizens. - Most senior engineers and several managers have been either forced out or quit. This year has seen a very high level of attrition and the company is struggling to backfill. - Engineers are scapegoated after they leave. - No clear vision of where products will be 6 months or more out. This leads to constant roadmap changes. - Pay is lower than industry standards.

Thank you for writing your review and I felt compelled to respond directly. 2018 was a difficult year for our Engineering team. While that is true, the underlying reason was that Engineering built a great product that the market wanted. This rapid adoption pushed our systems, but every Zapprovian who was part of our journey getting us to this level should be incredibly proud of the hard work they contributed. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you. In terms of the scapegoat comment, this personally hurts. I believe that everyone brings their best to the job and I hope we honor and respect that. However, we also need to reflect and always learn and improve. It is inherent to our culture so that everyone can come along with us on that learning path. I realize that some of that could come across as scapegoating even though it is never my intention. I have sincere gratitude and respect for each of you who helped us get to this stage. What causes the most concern is seeing this post on Christmas Eve. Knowing that you were feeling this way on the holiday weekend makes me very sad. I encourage you to call me or email me so we can process this together over coffee or lunch. I’d never want anyone, current employee or an alum to feel this way. You are clearly someone who is incredibly passionate about your work. If I can ever be of help please call me anytime. -Monica
