Unhealthy Crisis-Driven Culture

Pros

There is a well-stocked kitchen and an office manager that goes above and beyond to buy people their favorite candy and chips. The take what you need PTO policy is great. Some managers really care about their teams. The talent team does a great job bringing in smart, interesting people.

Cons

At Zapproved, everything is on fire all the time. At times, it can feel exciting to put a fire out and feel like you’re making a big impact, but the flip side is feeling burned out and realizing that these crises are completely self-made by the people running the company. The leadership team is seemingly unable to plan anything, and changes direction every few months. They overcompensate for their disorganization by sharing plans and prototypes too early in the development cycle and committing to unrealistic delivery dates for big, exciting new things. Everyone gets thrown into crisis-mode trying to meet these commitments, and when it becomes clear that they can’t deliver, the knives come out to determine who is going to take the fall. Some managers shield their teams from this, while others willfully throw people under the bus. Whether or not Zapproved is a good place to work mostly depends on how insulated you are from upper management. At the end of all that, Zappoved delivers some half-baked software and/or a ton of weak excuses for why they didn’t live up to their promises. To smooth over the damage, leadership will dangle some shiny new thing they can’t deliver on, and the fire starts again. Enormous amounts of time and resources are wasted on feeding this cycle. It drags the culture down and makes working at Zapproved much more stressful and toxic than it needs to be.

Pros

I think they are trying to make employees feel a part of the conversation, so I think the intent is there.

Cons

The top down management style is counter productive. Everything is a fire, nothing has been planned, agile doesn't mean flailing about.

Pros

Company has good values and makes a good effort to actually live by them but this is becoming increasingly difficult. Successful market position and strong products. Company lunch meeting once a week Take what you need vacation policy Decent benefits (including a Bonus which you wont get because of unrealistic sales goals.) Company has made good strides in gender diversity. -Genuinely better than most. Acquisition by an equity group in Q2 2017 is professionalizing some areas and creating needed process in some areas where it was needed.

Cons

Acquisition by an equity group in Q2 2017 is also having growing negative consequences: much of what made Zapproved special is being replaced by soulless MBA style management. Make Customers Ridiculously Happy philosophy replaced with Make Investors Ridiculously Happy Really great people who have been with the company for years are rapidly leaving. People are now being treated as disposable Unrealistic sales and product development goals are driving disfunction. 401k match is vested over 4 years so you will never see most of it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. This is a time of tremendous growth and transition for Zapproved, and we know that these changes are not always easy. It's important for managers, HR, and the executive team to continually receive feedback from our employees as we scale. In response to the 401k vesting item: The match is 100% vested immediately. When we started our 401k match program mid-2017, we proactively changed vesting so that all money was 100% vested immediately. For 2018, we have moved to a safe harbor match, which also has 100% immediate vesting.
