Pros

A good place if you want to coast.

Cons

I came for the “great company culture” I heard about. However you define it, no place with that high of employee/contractor churn qualifies as “great”. My experience would define it as feelings first, comfortable, complacent. Also surprisingly political with a strong leftward bent. Product has a solid direction, but technically- you could say there is no technical direction or there are as many directions as engineers. Both would be correct. For software developers- it’s not just developing. It’s also support, devops, qa, sdet, architecture… basically you will be responsible for the design, code, testing, infrastructure, testing infrastructure, deployment, and support of the application you work on.

Pros

I have been with the company for a short period, and my first impression has been great from the interviewing process, onboarding, diversity, transparency + communication, benefits, etc. It is still early on in my employment, but I love coming into work at Zapproved. I had a positive team experience at my previous job as well, but the contrast in job satisfaction simply from being surrounded by a very diverse group of people in terms of gender, ethnicity, work experience and educational backgrounds is striking. Quite frankly, I could never go back to a more homogeneous environment. I love that I was able to jump in and start contributing right away. My manager and teammates are very supportive for the short AND long term in terms of goal-setting and planning. Before coming in, I did check out Glassdoor and was a bit concerned about some of the negative reviews. However, most of those worries have been alleviated since I started working at Zapproved. It is very apparent that there has been a lot of change in the last year at the company, and I'm quite impressed with the transparency I've witnessed as a newcomer. Every company will run into obstacles. I want to work at the company that will adjust their trajectory to overcome obstacles rather than stay rigid. Some notable changes seem to be a strongly agile work approach, adjustments to milestones, and a re-org -- all for the better. Overall, I sense that a lot of people are quite happy working here. I look forward to updating this review after I have been here longer.

Cons

Parking waitlist. However, we will be moving locations next year, and there are benefits to help with this.

Pros

Most of the people who work there are amazing. They're respectful, collaborative, insightful humans who are eager to solve problems. Their use of technology is very cool and they are willing to give young, unexperienced people an opportunity to get hands on skills. Zapproved is a great place to start your career because they have some great mentors. They are also really willing to pay for training materials, classes, conferences, workshops, etc. They really encourage you to build up your expertise.

Cons

For a company that talks a lot about diversity, management does NOT treat female and employees of color with the same respect as white, male employees. While employed at Zapproved, I witnessed several people get away with some appalling behavior. Some male employees are allowed to talk over coworkers and make rude remarks to their peers (verbally and in email). Several male employees (current and former) are known CREEPS (inappropriately coming onto coworkers in the office and out of the office at work related events, nonconsensual touching, and blatant staring). It's ridiculous that in this era of media exposing companies for ignoring (and thus, allowing) sexual misconduct, Zapproved is on the same train. Many employees make below their market value and the benefits are mediocre. They get away with this by hiring a diverse group of people who don't have a lot of experience.

Zapproved Response

We are truly saddened to read that this was your experience at Zapproved. As you mention above, we have a respectful, collaborative team and we have zero tolerance for the behaviors you discussed. When situations like this have occurred in our workplace we address them immediately and have a track record of doing so. Regarding the comment about favoritism toward privileged identities, we work so very hard to ensure that we are as inclusive as possible. From the very top down, Zapproved has taken as part of its mission to unwind privilege in our culture. From having a dedicated DE&I Manager and internal committee to monthly programs, we are trying to set the standard. Finally, we have increased the number of informal and formal feedback channels for employees, including exit interviews, so employees have a number of safe forums to share feedback on their experiences. If you still have concerns, I welcome you to reach out directly to me or our HR team so we can better understand your perspective. - Susy Dunn, Chief People Officer
