Pros

Zayo is a good company because it is a company that is not afraid to change in response to feedback from employees, investors, and customers. Zayo knows it is not perfect but they do listen and try to make employees happy. Flexible work including work from home for certain back office teams, and It was just announced that we will have a 401k match starting mid-year in response to employee requests. So there WILL be a 401k match. Zayo is still a young company and they try to keep the company feeling small and tight and this is on purpose. I also think it's not for everyone because if you don't enjoy a very results driven work environment you might not like zayo. A lot of my colleagues are workaholic types and will check email and send replies at midnight and have calls after hours by choice. They just enjoy the work and despite it not being an expectation it is something they do. I don't feel pressured to sign off at 5 pm just because of the work life balance initiative going on. They are sending out the message that it's ok to sign off at five if you want to then you should. I think the culture does attract a lot of workaholic types though and I think of this new work balance initiative to let people know just because some choose to do it, it is not a requirement of the company to put in a bunch of extra hours. We are never short on work to be done though and that is awesome. I do feel that I have job security and zayo likes to move people around within the company. I believe that if my position was ever eliminated or transitioned into something else, zayo would find me a place in the company before they would just lay me off. They, unlike some competitors, do move people around in the company a lot into different roles and I think this helps contribute to how well rounded a lot of the employees are. At some of the other large telecoms there is a constant fear of being laid off and a lot of people do get laid off... it creates a very negative culture of fear. Zayo isn't like that at all. Why spend money training people just to let them go? Zayo leverages the training and time spent at the company by employees and a lot of time promotes internally to keep talent. If you are reading this and considering a position with the company, take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. No job is perfect.

Cons

If you aren't dedicated to your work you will not fit in at zayo. This company is filled with very driven people and not clock punchers. If you expect to slide out the door every day or log off every night at 4;45 you won't fit in here. It's a culture of "we are number one, two is not a winner and three nobody remembers". The teams always strive to be the best, I don't care if you are talking about sales or back office billing. The culture shines through and only your best is expected or accepted. Not for someone just looking for a casual job or likes the phrase "that's not my job."

Thanks for taking the time to provide substance and specifics. Our goal is to make Zayo the best place to work at in the industry. I know we have work to do to accomplish this. Telecom is consolidating. As such, our #1 priority was to build a company that can remain a leader for years to come -- instead of one that would be sold or would just putter along. To do this, we required incredible assets (fiber/customers/employees) and satisfied investors. We are attending well to this priority, which gives us the opportunity to develop and shape a culture that will be truly special for the team. I recognize the culture we are building isn't right for everyone, but I believe it is for the vast majority of those who are with Zayo today.

Pros

Solid benefits. Keep busy. Good coworkers.

Cons

Hard to advance. Work life balance more difficult for some than other (that needs to shift). Politics. Some unqualified people in important roles.

Thanks for your review. I see you have the impression that it is hard to advance and that others who are unqualified are getting promoted too easily. The company is growing and we are looking for individuals who are able to take leadership roles. Given the amount of growth, we don't always promote the right people into the right spots at the right time. We error on the side of those who are more ambitious, more comfortable with change, and more apt to learn across disciplines. We move people around a fair amount to develop people with a better end-to-end understanding of the business. This stretches people into certain roles but over time makes them better across responsibilities. I'm sorry you feel like you are not getting proper recognition. Don't give up. Engage in open conversation with your management and others. The opportunities are there -- I hope you find the ones that work best for you. Good luck.
