Core talent is leaving very quickly

Pros

None anymore. The company "appears" to be in a very desperate rush to sell the company and make shareholders liquid.

Cons

Almost all core team members with long tenure have left the company, with departures increasing sharply in recent months. Anyone considering working for the company or relying on its software should take this into account.

Thank you for sharing your perspective so candidly. We understand how unsettling periods of transition can feel, especially for people who invested years of their work and energy into the company. We want to be clear that commercetools is focused on building and growing the business for the long term. The changes made over the past year were driven by where our customers and the market are headed, and by the work required to strengthen the company’s foundation for continued growth. We also recognize that this direction, and the pace of change that came with it, won’t be right for everyone. It’s clear from your experience that this environment was no longer the right fit for you, and we respect that. We appreciate you taking the time to share this feedback. While difficult to read, it’s important for us to hear and helps inform how we reflect on the impact of our decisions on the people behind the work.

Toxic culture

Pros

commercetools was a great place to work until 2023, after which the culture and overall experience significantly deteriorated.

Cons

Leadership within the People team demonstrates clear favoritism. Employees who do not align with internal politics or participate in the prevailing toxic culture are often terminated without clear or transparent justification.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. It’s no secret that commercetools - and the industry in which we operate - has undergone a lot of change. We recognize that not everyone will be comfortable with the path we are taking, but every decision has been made to ensure the long-term health and stability of the company, and subsequently, our employees. It’s important to note that terminating employees who do not align with our culture is not, and has never been, a company practice. When we have to make difficult employment decisions, the only factors are the performance of the individual and the impact of their role for our next phase of growth. We wish you the best of luck in your next chapter.

Toxic Environment

Pros

Junior and mid level employees are great and hardworking, built life long connections with these people and former colleagues.

Cons

In the last 18 months, the company has changed significantly, and not for the better. Benefits that were core to the company have been cut (like work from abroad) and lay offs are happening frequently, the latest being just days before Christmas. The company claims that it's in a sound financial position and has had its best year yet but at what expense? Why are you laying people off and cutting benefits if the business is doing well? The new CEO is also the Chair of the Board so there is no pushback to his ideas or whims. The rest of leadership is afraid of him. The company has lost itself and is no longer a place where you would want to work. It's incredibly toxic with lots of smoke and mirrors, and little positive direction.

We’re genuinely glad to hear that the relationships you built with colleagues were meaningful — the strength, dedication, and care of our people is something we deeply value. At the same time, we recognize that the last 18 months have been difficult and unsettling for many, and that change — even when made deliberately — can feel personal and painful, especially for those who have spent years helping build the company. It’s important to acknowledge that impact. Some of the decisions referenced here were driven by a need to align the company more closely with where our customers, market, and long-term strategy are headed. These choices were not reflections of individual performance, nor were they made lightly. We’ve worked to provide transparency where possible and to treat people with care and respect throughout these transitions, even when the outcomes were hard. We also want to be clear that leadership decisions are shaped through active discussion, challenge, and accountability at both the executive and board levels. While not every decision will be agreed with by everyone, they are made with the long-term health of the company and its people in mind. We understand that not everyone will feel aligned with where the company is today, and we respect that perspective. We remain committed to building a focused, grounded organization where teams know the direction we’re heading, understand why decisions are made, and can do meaningful work alongside thoughtful, capable colleagues. We appreciate you sharing your point of view and wish you the very best in what comes next.
