Awful reviews don’t happen when people are treated well

Pros

With benefits steadily decreasing, the only pros are some of the people still left after 3 separate rounds of layoffs and an voluntary severance package

Cons

3 rounds of layoffs in 2025. Last one was 1 week before Christmas. Guessing there will be more to come as board looks to exit. Company has over-indexed in profits > people. Look at all of the recent low ratings. This doesn’t happen when companies treat people well or companies are thriving.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We hear the frustration in this review, and it’s clear the last year has been a difficult experience for some. We do want to clarify a few points for accuracy. commercetools has not had three layoffs in 2025. There have been three layoffs in the company’s history total. Each was a hard decision made with the long-term direction of the business in mind, not a reflection of individual performance or dedication. We know that context doesn’t remove the impact, but it does matter. We also recognize that change, especially with a new CEO and a different cultural direction, won’t work for everyone. As the company evolves, expectations around focus, accountability, and how we work together have shifted. That can be energizing for some and frustrating for others, and both reactions are valid. Regarding the All Hands format, emoji reactions were removed so speakers could focus on presenting without reacting in real time. Feedback channels were not removed. Questions and discussion were intentionally shifted to in-person settings, as shared during the same meeting, and broader employee feedback continues to be collected through established avenues outside of the All Hands AMA. We appreciate you sharing how this period has felt. While we may not agree on every conclusion, we take the sentiment seriously and continue to reflect on how we communicate, listen, and lead through moments of change.

Organizational Chaos Masked by Corporate Responses

Pros

Some talented individual contributors trying their best. The product has decent market positioning in theory.

Cons

CEO Micromanagement & Fear Culture: ∙ the new CEO and board member micromanages and acts like a tyrant, staying on top of operational details instead of focusing on strategic direction. No trust on teams and their capacity, experience and expertise to deliver on results. ∙ Creates a culture of fear where people are afraid to make decisions or take initiative ∙ Employees walk on eggshells rather than innovating or taking ownership ∙ Second-guessing and bottlenecks at the top prevent teams from executing effectively ∙ “This is not a ‘lifestyle’ company. It’s about winning” - but at what cost to employee wellbeing? Culture & Management Problems: ∙ The corporate responses to negative reviews are lots of buzzwords, zero accountability. ∙ No psychological safety to challenge bad decisions or raise The Reality: This place “feels soulless” as one reviewer wrote. Between the micromanagement from the top and the constant fear of layoffs, talented people can’t do their jobs effectively. The gap between what leadership claims and what employees experience daily is massive. If you’re looking for stability, strategic clarity, autonomy to do your work, or a company that values its people - keep looking. Financial Instability: ∙ Layoffs and continuing changes in strategy create constant anxiety ∙ Business outlook rated poorly by employees ∙ Cost-cutting measures that feel arbitrary and damage

We recognize how difficult periods of transition can feel, especially for those who have invested several years here. It’s clear this experience was frustrating, and we don’t want to dismiss that. We do appreciate the acknowledgment of the talented people at commercetools and the strength of our product’s position in the market. That work, and the people behind it, are the reason we continue to play a leading role as the industry moves toward more flexible, enterprise-grade commerce models. Leadership transitions are rarely easy. A new CEO brings different expectations, operating rhythms, and a sharper focus on execution and accountability. For some, that clarity and pace creates momentum. For others, it can feel uncomfortable or restrictive. We understand that the way we work today will not be the right fit for everyone, and that tension is real. We also want to clarify the concern around financial instability. While we have had to make difficult decisions in response to market shifts and evolving customer needs, commercetools is in a stable financial position. We met the majority of our financial goals and targets in 2025, and recent changes were driven by long-term strategic alignment rather than short-term financial distress. Feedback like this is taken seriously, even when we don’t fully align on the conclusions. We continue to reflect on how we lead, how we communicate change, and how we support teams through periods of transition, while staying focused on building a durable company for the future.

Poor long-term organisational planning

Pros

- Flexible working - Decent Pay - Originally, this was a 3.5/4* company, but it has gone downhill since 2022 in terms of culture and work

Cons

- Two rounds of layoffs in twelve months - Lack of clarity in decisions and priorities by managers - RTO (3-day), a strategic repositioning, but difficult for those working remotely to feel valued and harder to connect with their team - Lack of 'real' transparency around evolving business strategy, leading to positions being unexpectedly eliminated (rather than the decision being made across teams) - High stress, lack of decision-makers, leaving people with constantly changing priorities or waiting for work priorities to be approved

It’s fair to say that the company has gone through significant change as we’ve adjusted our strategy to match where the market and our customers are headed. Despite being difficult to make, the recent decisions were intended to set the business up for long-term stability within a changing market with different priorities, rather than short-term comfort. That doesn’t make the impact any easier for those affected. One of the reasons we invested heavily in our 2026 roadmap and shared it as we normally do was to be transparent about where we’re going, how teams connect to that direction, and what success looks like going forward. That work was meant to reduce uncertainty. For distributed teams, staying connected and feeling included takes real effort. We’ve put structures in place to support remote employees, including dedicated employee experience programs and virtual connection spaces like commercecoffee, but we know those don’t fully replace the feeling of day-to-day proximity for everyone. Ultimately, the way we operate today reflects a more focused and execution-driven environment. We know that this direction won’t be the right fit for everyone, especially for those who valued earlier ways of working, and we respect that perspective. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It helps us reflect honestly on what’s working, what isn’t, and how we continue to evolve.
