Great product being dragged down by toxic people

Pros

The product is great (smart thermostat) and the CEO really cares and has a good heart. Prior to 2021 this was one of the best places to work and so many talented individuals really cared about the company mission.

Cons

The CEO may be one of the few remaining good leaders at the company, but unfortunately, many of those in leadership positions are engaging in harassment and intimidation, causing valuable employees to leave. Despite being brought to the company's attention, toxic leaders are being protected and employees are being blamed. There seems to be a wall of fear protecting certain individuals in positions of power, and the company is not taking steps to address this issue. It appears that the company is too embarrassed to admit the problem and is hoping it will resolve itself or it's financially better to not address it. It's concerning that a company that talks about its commitment to DE&I principles is not following through on them.

Just short of being legally bad

Pros

Great coworkers though honestly the bonds you make are often a product of you all having to look out for each other as a function of failed processes and being let down by management over and over again. The thermostat is a legitimately good product and one you can sell with integrity.

Cons

Ecobee laid off 10% of its workforce like four weeks into the pandemic. No trying to figure out reduced hours, or reviewing and revising forecasts, just layoffs. Despite the thermostat being the only salable product because the others are on the same not very good and have no real value in the market, it is not focused on. The company is very short-sighted as far as revenues go and this is not a good place for sales people. There are several members of the senior leadership team who have formal complaints logged against them with HR who does nothing. The complaints range from abuse to professional impropriety to favouritism. Significant wage disparity between team members and also with the market. Exclusively white male senior leadership team, predominantly white male middle management team, with no desire to change.

Pros

- market rate pay for design / dev - well-stocked fridges / coffee - diverse tech stack - interns seemed to enjoy working here, and the intern to full-time pipeline is strong. - large personal education budget (I recommend using it to go to a conference somewhere fun, and if the conference sucks just go have fun on their plane ticket dime) - development teams are decently structured, and teams are pretty free to do their own thing re: tech selection, implementation. This also means that the work environment on one team may be totally different from another, so that's good and bad. - the office location has pros and cons, but one major pro is you can take nice walks by the lake - like any larger company you'll probably find people that you vibe with, I made lots of friends here.

Cons

- Delusional CEO. Not sure if he thought he was talking a big game to hype up the workers, or if he believes what he says. Either way it's pretty irritating to listen to him talk himself up 24/7 and act like the company is revolutionary when in reality it's just a toy company for bored home-owning boomers. - CEO talks a big game about caring about the environment, but when workers raised ideas about how we could be proactive it's pretty clear that it's all talk . - Unrealistic product timelines, then when it becomes apparent the product timeline is horrible the CEO just doubles down. - support workers are treated very poorly. It's hard to respect a company when they treat people this way. The support workers need a lot of knowledge and patience to do their job and should be better compensated and given more accommodations and praise. The company couldn't function without them. - New office is in a poor location. Not much to eat and the busses around there are brutal during commute times.
