Pros

Employee experiences differ widely, depending on role and where you work. For some, there’s zero work-life balance, and taking time off is nitmarish; yet others barely work a 40-hour week and can take unpaid time whenever they want. Some make above average salaries, while others barely make enough money to live off of. Some are trusted to be where they need to be and do what they need to do; while others are micromanaged and have every moment monitored. So, it’s important to keep in mind that each person’s review is based on where they work, what kind of work they do, who their peers are, and how well their managers lead. Having said that, the pros are the same as most large companies: 401k with 3% match, somewhat subsidized healthcare (no option for Kaiser)—eligible to enroll after 30 days, you begin earning your 15 days of PTO on day one (no waiting period), PTO max is 240 hours/year (i.e., the max accrual amount) for employees in the first 5 years of employment and goes up from there, and free drinks and snacks in some locations (like HQ). Generally, your colleagues are nice helpful people.

Cons

Poor management is the crux of all that is wrong with this company. loanDepot does not offer cost-of-living adjustments or raises. The only way to earn more money (if you’re not on commission or a bonus structure) is to get a new title. The result is that this company is incredibly top heavy. To retain decent workers, people move from individual contributors to leads and managers, with no real leadership skill set, no real intention of being a good manager (hey, they were ready to leave and their manager dangled a higher position and salary, so they accepted it). The result is managers with no direct reports, managers who “manage” other managers, and departments with one EVP, SVP, and then multiple VPs and Directors, several managers, and only a handful of individual contributors. There are a million different titles for people who appear to do the same job. There a too many compensation structures to count, and you have no way of know whether your “manager” makes $10k more than you, or $100k more. The worst of it is that management training is non-existent. This leads to leadership run amok. Managers openly discriminate, especially against older applicants and workers, and women with children. And HR and HRBPs do little to report or curb this behavior. Managers fire people based on personal preference, then go back and try to justify the dismissal by asking coworkers to lie about a colleagues performance. It’s basically the Wild West. If you have a good manager, stay until you can no longer rise in the ranks. And if you have a poor manager, get out quick because things will likely get worse from there.

Pros

None that I can think of.

Cons

If you have no problem working for a company that does not value your experience, education and ethics, then loanDepot is the perfect company for you. Management only rewards employees that either have no morals, integrity or ethics. If you have no values and have no talent, then you will be rewarded handsomely there and will be promoted faster than a New York minute!! You are not allowed to use the word lay-off because apparently the company does not lay-off, they fire people. You are chosen based on what management thinks of you. You can have a great review, your peers like you and you deliver your projects but if the management does not like you, your name will be on top of the list. They fire people they don't like and turn around and hire new people for the same position and then fire them if they don't like them. It's a continuous battle. There is only work and life balance for the chosen few and the rest of the employees have to work 12 to 14 hour days and when the time comes, they treat them like garbage and fire them. If you complain to HR about anything, your name will move up to the top of the list of firing really fast. I saw some employees come in at 10am, take 2 hour lunch break and leave at 3 and because they were brought over by the manager they worked for in their previous company and they proudly bragged about how nobody will touch them because of who they know! The CEO brags about how much he cares about his employees but when you tell him about all the bad things his leadership is doing, he gets rid of the person pointing this out and he promotes his leadership. It's true that people hire people like themselves. I used to think very highly of the CEO until I learned that he is all talk and no action. He hires these leaders that are just like him. No compassion for the employees and all he cares about is how much more money he can make and that loyalty and integrity mean nothing. If you are a good back stabber, prejudice, evil and a horrible individual, then you should definitely apply at loanDepot. They recognize characteristics that match their own and you will be hired on the spot! If you have no morals and have no problem sleeping your way to the top regardless of whether you and the leader are married and have kids, then you should definitely apply at loanDepot. Actually if you add the two characteristics I mentioned at the top of your resume, you will be hired as a leader and promoted faster than you can imagine. It's not about what you know and your knowledge and your hard work, it's all about whether you have morals or not. If you have morals, then there is no career path for you, if you have no morals and are willing to do whatever it takes to get that promotion, then there are great opportunities at loanDepot. Just sell your soul to the devil and you will succeed 100% at this company.

Pros

When the refinance boom was happening, you could make a lot of money at loanDepot even though you had to work really hard. The company is 2nd largest non-bank direct lender in the country and can survive losing money for awhile if necessary.

Cons

They are becoming more and more like Quicken Loans every day. This means that you have someone watching everything you do. Every phone call is recorded, you have to ask everyone for a credit card before running credit. They have even added video devices in the cubicles to video tape everything you do. They have taken micro management to new levels, so it is great for something that really needs hand holding to do their job. If they even think you are looking at other possible jobs, they will fire you on the spot, so don't trust them at all. Don't give a 2 week notice because they will fire you immediately. They are the most mismanaged company I have ever worked for, so good luck!

loanDepot Response

As a high-growth and fast-paced company, we all at times work long days. At the same time, we also encourage employees to take advantage of their 15 days of PTO and the fun activities we offer during the work experience. Things like Wednesday treats, parking lot races, quarterly thematic lunches, and more. Cultures like ours may not be an ideal fit for everyone. We appreciate you sharing your concerns and will include them in our ongoing efforts to improve our work environment.
