Pros

great co-workers, creative environment and opportunities for growth. I have been fortunate to have been with the company from the very beginning. I come with many years of production experience as well as corporate. Startup culture was new but i am very aware of work ethic, job performance and self-advocacy. I have grown in the company over the 3.5 years and have witness a lot of transition, pivoting and adjustment to the business due to COVID and opening new studios. Working with a team that is open to vulnerability and self awareness if only found if you offer that back and i am grateful for many of those i work with day to day that share this. Leadership is very transparent on the state of the business. I am seen and when i do not feel seen or heard i advocate for myself, I have done a lot of work for myself and i find opportunities to support my team i which always teaches me more about how i can grow. I have had very candid conversations with my team and manager and it has caused for good change. I believe you dress for the job you want and i am grateful for my growth and success in my career here, i can say i have put in the work and earned it based on my accomplishments, it was never just handed to me and i appreciate that. We also have a mental health benefit for therapy compensation opportunities which is a huge blessing and i encourage all take advantage of this.

Cons

fast moving train can sometimes cause loss sight of issues. sometimes things "need to be done" without a mindful assessment of the possible effects, not so much cons, but more so feedback. There have been times and seasons that were harder than others but this is the ebb and flow of a new and growing business. It is easy to complain, tho there is validity in any argument, i can say that i do not think these concerns are fully ignored. this company is filled with humans all trying to do the best they can. I have the perspective that if you want to be treated a certain way, you need to also treat others that way. issues with management, i can say are valid to a point and we need to be better at listening, but i truly believe that leadership does care and is trying to be better, tho i do think a lot of people feel more comfortable speaking anonymously on a review vs. having an honest and true conversation with people they have the issues with, in which that is also something we need to be better at developing in our teams.

Pros

i had the opportunity to see many aspects of a business i may not have at a larger company and made a few friends. but the long hours, lack of recognition from management, unrealistic goals, poor inter-company communication and the strain on my mental health was not worth it in the end.

Cons

i was drawn in by the idea of building something and being part of the next big thing. however, as time passed personal/company goals were set way beyond reasonable expectation, empty promises were made, management's approach was very unstructured/unprofessional and burn out was extreme working overtime often. when brought up to management the response was extremely disappointing. there was minimal care to my well being or desire to take a real look into my concerns, just an emphasis on being scrappy, getting it done, the excuse of well its a start up. as far as career progression i saw reasonable promotions, but also a few very quick promotions to newbies while extremely deserving employees were skipped over. i also heard many comments from colleagues of empty promises for salary, stocks, promotions from management. overall i lack trust in the management to accurately access employees skillsets and overall career development with this company.

It is our goal to continue to employ crew members who are drawn to the idea of building a company that truly achieves the mission of providing quality content for all. Acknowledging the business as a “start-up” is not meant to be a cop out, but rather a setting of expectations. We are in a period of high growth. Most, if not all, large companies have been through this phase and all have relied on a level of employee flexibility and resilience to be afforded the opportunity to get it right. And, we understand that start-ups are not for everyone. Employee concerns are important to us and should be taken seriously. We apologize if you did not feel that way. It is our goal to hear out our crew members, to be honest about what is and is not possible, and to have the time and opportunity to pivot where needed while knowing that, sometimes, getting there takes time. As our crew here at soona continues to grow, our people team is committed to expanding our internal structures and policies to better support our employees and their growth. A large part of job satisfaction comes from clarity of role, performance, and goals. Communication of these aspects of a job is key, and we’ve already taken steps towards improving this clarity in the last quarter through the rollout of a new annual employee review/evaluation structure and a series of manager trainings. Feedback from our crews combined with these reviews has led to many promotions, compensation increases above the national average, and grants of stock options to all full-time employees.. We want to continue this momentum, but also realize there is still work to be done.
