ACI Cape Town makes a difference locally and globally In September 2018, ACI Cape Town introduced ecobrick stations in each of the site’s kitchens as part of the office’s ongoing local environmental and recycling efforts. Since then, the team has made over 100 bricks from on-site waste, which have been donated to the City of Cape Town for use in constructing an early childhood development center to be built of mostly reclaimed materials. Ecobricks are made of a rinsed and dried plastic bottles that have random plastic waste compressed inside then. Generally, a stick is used to stuff the bottle densely layer by layer with non-biodegradable waste. Completed Eco-bricks typically about a pound (~600 grams) but are stuffed so densely that they can bear the weight of a person without deformation. “Considering the average piece of packaging weighs less than 2g and an ecobrick weighs in at around 600g, we have already redirected a lot of plastic waste to a great cause,” said Rachel van Eyk, senior manager marketing and initiator of the project.
