Foreign trade zones, also known as FTZs, have been a huge boom for international businesses looking to save money and reduce headaches when importing goods into the United States. The United States government first began setting up FTZs in the 1930s in an effort to strengthen the nation’s economy, promote global trade, encourage growth, and attract foreign investment. While the enormous increase in economic globalization we’ve seen over the last century isn’t entirely due to FTZs, it’s safe to say they have definitely been a contributing factor. The first foreign trade zone opened in New York in 1936. Today, there are nearly 3,500 FTZs across the United States, more than half a million U.S. workers are employed in an FTZ, and billions of dollars of goods flow through these zones every single year. But what exactly is a foreign trade zone? How does it function? And, most importantly, how can businesses use them to their advantage? The Basics and Benefits of Foreign Trade Zones Essentially, FTZs are designated areas within the U.S. where certain trade and tax laws differ from the rest of the nation’s import and export regulations. At a very basic level, they can be thought of as “international soil” where trade is allowed to operate more freely. Logistics companies do have to pass a rigorous government approval process to gain foreign trade zone approval, but there are significant benefits once they attain that status.

Korean Lunar New Year, or Seollal, falls on Saturday, February 10 in 2024. Beginning on Korean New Year’s Eve, the traditional three-day period of celebrations for Seollal is a time of celebrating with family and showing respect to ancestors. Because Seollal is on a Saturday this year, the official public holiday for Lunar New Year in Korea is from February 9 until February 12. The start of this major holiday in the lives of Koreans, in January or February each year, is determined by the lunar calendar — the cycles of the moon’s phases — and takes place on the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, or the second new moon after the winter solstice. The holiday will be celebrated this week at CJ Logistics America, responsible for the North America region of CJ Logistics, a core business of CJ Group, a global conglomerate headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. The celebration at CJLA’s corporate headquarters in Des Plaines, IL, on February 9 will feature a performance by SoriBeat, the youth Korean music ensemble presented by Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago (KPAC). SoriBeat programs include Korean drumming, mask dance, instrumental music (gayageum and danso), chitadae (Korean marching band), and folk songs. With 80+ warehousing, transportation, and freight forwarding operations across the United States, Canada and Mexico, CJ Logistics America is aligned with CJ Logistics’ global vision to maximize customer value through innovation and continuous improvement.
CJ Logistics America joins in recognizing and celebrating Black History Month, the annual February celebration of achievements and contributions by African Americans in the US. “African Americans and the Arts,” the 2024 theme, explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of “visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression.” The Association for the Study of African American Life and History presents the theme as part of the month-long festival. US presidents have officially designated the month of February as Black History Month since 1976. Also known as African American History Month, the event began as the idea of Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. The first celebration was during a week in February 1926 that included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. With a vision of global community and diversity and the values of Integrity, Passion, Creativity and Respect, CJ Logistics America believes our world is better when diverse peoples and cultures come together to understand each other’s experiences and perspectives.
