We are so proud of CZIer @Tania Simoncelli for being elected to the rank of @AAAS Fellow. Tania has long worked to harness science, technology and innovation for societal benefit. Before coming to CZI, she worked in the government and non-profit sectors, where she led major national efforts to end the practice of gene patenting, strengthen the forensic sciences, and advance precision medicine. At CZI, Tania built and leads our Science in Society program. This includes the Rare As One Project, which works to support and leverage the power of patients to accelerate research and unite rare disease organizations in their quest for treatments and cures. Our co-founders Priscilla and Mark are announcing a new 10-year vision in this year’s annual letter to develop the science and technology to push the boundaries of what we can see and measure in human biology. We’ve learned so much in the first few years of our science work and where we can have the biggest impact to reach our ambitious goal of curing all diseases by the end of the century. This new chapter in our science work will focus on building tools, launching institutes and supporting research to observe and measure biological processes in unprecedented detail and in real time throughout the human body. Our hope is to empower scientists everywhere to make faster progress toward a healthier, more equitable future for everyone. “The need is so great, but the research participation amongst people of color is really low, and that has serious ramifications for developing drugs and therapies that work well in people who look like me.” Norbert Tavares is a microbiologist who is dedicated to making sure everyone can benefit from groundbreaking science and technologies in his work at CZI. He recently spearheaded a new grant program — Ancestry Networks for the Human Cell Atlas — to increase representation in genomics research so future therapies don’t leave anyone behind. But Norbert knows not everyone can wait for that future. So he’s bringing that same dedication to equitable science and medicine in his personal life, too, to help save a life. Norbert donated his kidney to a stranger in need: “I'm living my values of my work through my personal life as well. Gaby’s work helps tackle racial inequities in our educational systems by “reimagining what it means to have measures and metrics that disrupt existing patterns of inequity with tools that humanize and see the brilliance of Black, Brown and Indigenous youth.”
