🥳 This year for Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month, our Asian Resources and Community employee resource group (or ARC for short) organized a celebration of their diverse and unified heritages — their theme for this years festivities! One event centered around Boba, a tea-based drink that originated in Taiwan in the early 1980s and usually contains tapioca balls or other toppings. Delicious doesn’t even begin to describe it! 🧋

How are we building the future of science? Our co-founders Priscilla and Mark share their vision of supporting research and building tools to directly measure human biology in action in a new interview with Eric Topol of Medscape. This includes launching the new Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biomedical Imaging with an initial focus of identifying and mapping the position of every protein in a cell. This will be vital to better understanding what causes disease, and finding treatments and cures.

February 28 is Rare Disease Day — a time to shine a light on the 400 million people globally affected by over 7,000 rare diseases. The vast majority of rare disease patients, isolated by the rarity of their diseases and scattered around every corner of the world, have often never met another patient with the same disease. That’s why for the second year in a row, CZI is joining landmarks around the world and illuminating our HQ in Redwood City to create a global chain of lights to show our support for rare disease patients. CZIers are also joining the movement by lighting up their homes to spread hope and show rare disease patients they aren’t alone in their disease. ❤️💚💙💜

Women in STEM are integral to our mission of building a better future for everyone. The women on our science team are building better tools to enhance the way we respond to outbreaks, using machine learning to solve research challenges, increasing representation in scientific research, studying the development of tissues and diseases cell by cell, and connecting new types of collaborators to solve unanswered questions about the brain. 5 Inspiring #WomenInSTEM Who Are Building the Future
“There’s just so much we still don’t know about the human body, and imaging technologies will definitely help researchers understand and make new discoveries faster.” One big challenge? Image analysis tools are fragmented: there are so many different tools, and multiple tools are often needed for a given experiment. That’s where Justine Larsen comes in. An engineering manager at CZI, Justine and her team, alongside a global community, are building and contributing to tools — like napari and the napari hub — that allow scientists to visualize, annotate and analyze microscopy data using one, integrated imaging platform. Learn more about napari and the other tech tools by CZI that are accelerating biomedical breakthroughs.
