This month we learned different ways that we as allies can show up for our Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Our Asian American and Pacific Islander employee resource group teamed up with Hollaback! and Asian Americans Advancing Justice for a training on five de-escalation tactics. By using these tactics as bystanders, we can actively make a difference and intervene against harassment.

Are you ever at a loss for words when it comes to communicating your accomplishments, experience, special skills, unique value, and passion? Our women’s employee resource groups hosted an event moderated by a communications media expert to introduce the elevator pitch concept to members of the CZI team. Through a fun and interactive session, CZIers learned how to use this concept to craft clear concise pitches of their own!

We stand with our Asian American Pacific Islander community and colleagues, now and always. Our co-founder Priscilla Chan and our Head of Education Sandra Liu Huang joined other Asian American philanthropic leaders and allies in signing this letter of intent calling for solidarity and collective action in response to the recent racially motivated violence, harassment and discrimination targeting Asian Americans. “I love MY country. I love OUR country. Not for what it is today — as communities of color continue to be targets of systemic racism and violence. I love our country for what it stands for and can become. It is filled with optimists. I stand with this group of leaders willing to do what it takes to help our country live up to its potential.” –a message from our co-founder, Priscilla Chan #StopAsianHate

This year CZI’s day of service grew to a week of virtual activities! Our employees volunteered with local organizations — supporting their critical work, and helping us connect with our community and each other during this time of isolation. From building pandemic relief kits with Manzanita Works to helping Bay Area Cancer Connections create cards of encouragement for those affected by breast or ovarian cancer to making videos of read-aloud books for Raising A Reader, this is one of the ways for us to stay close to the work of our partners.

"I love gardening and growing flowers — the process of nourishing something from its roots. In many ways, our history and generations of Black roots also nourishes us and comprises who we are as a people. Our roots are strong — they empower us with the strength to survive challenges and the wisdom and grace to blossom. It's our time now to continue nourishing present and future generations to make sure everyone has the opportunity to grow and flourish, using our collective strength to resist systemic barriers." —Erika F., CZI Brand Director. Our employee resource group focused on empowering our Black community at CZI, selected #BlackJoy as our theme for Black History Month inspired by movement leaders and this quote by Audre Lorde: “The sharing of joy, whether physical, emotional, psychic, or intellectual, forms a bridge between the sharers which can be the basis for understanding much of what is not shared between them & lessens the threat of their difference.” Illustration by Brittany Harris.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is announcing $450 million to accelerate criminal justice and immigration reform. We’re at a pivotal moment nationwide for reform, and these new commitments will better empower movement leaders and accelerate progress. To this end, we’re launching a new independent, grantmaking criminal justice reform organization — the Justice Accelerator Fund — that will develop a broader coalition of leaders and organizations focused on rebuilding a justice system that puts community health, safety and healing over punishment, centers racial and economic equity, and ensures those most impacted are at the center of transformation. We’re also providing a new grant to our long-term partner FWD.us to support immigration reform efforts. FWD has played a critical role in protecting the DACA program, fighting family separation and reuniting families, and it will help lead the charge in 2021 to transform America’s immigration system into one that’s fair, humane, and centered on a pathway to citizenship.
