Our 2020 Annual Letter
The world only changes when we change it together. This year, we’re grateful to all our partners who help us keep building a better future for everyone — from fighting for racial equity in areas like housing and criminal justice, to transitioning thousands of students to virtual classrooms, to transforming an empty lab into one of the nation’s leading COVID-19 testing facilities in just eight days.
2020 Annual Letter: What We're Learning
Leaders and organizations in the Bay Area are tackling some of the most pressing challenges in the communities where we live and work. That’s why CZI is excited to support 56 Bay Area organizations in 2021 through our Community Fund! These leaders and organizations are working hard on the front lines of critical issues that affect the Bay Area, like education, housing, food security and more. Working from home might look different for everyone, but we’ve loved seeing the creativity in our employees’ workspaces. To support our hard-working teams, CZI provided stipends to employees to allow them to build a comfortable and effective work environment while we work remotely. During these uncertain times, we truly appreciate how driven our team is to continue building a more inclusive, just, and healthy future for everyone!

Last week, in an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote, Michigan lawmakers passed a historic Clean Slate package that is now awaiting the governor's signature. If approved, Michigan will be the 3rd state in the country to pass a full Clean Slate law and the first to include automated record clearing for felony offenses, both prospectively and retroactively. This is a big step in the fight for criminal justice reform — Michigan’s clean slate bill will pave the way for hundreds of thousands of people to finally be liberated from the lifelong stigma and barriers to housing, employment and education that often accompany a criminal record. Clean Slate legislation creates opportunities for people impacted by the justice system by streamlining and automating the expungement process, allowing citizens to move on with their lives and access the second chances they deserve.

The CZI team kicked off our virtual extravaganza with a live DJ to prepare for a fun-filled day of tasty treats, and sangria & cocktail creations for the adults, as well as step-by-step virtual activity workshops for CZI families to enjoy throughout the day- everything from terrariums to tie dye!

Welcome CZI summer interns! We’re excited to work with 12 interns from a variety of backgrounds, schools and locations across the country (and even Canada) this summer. We’ve shifted this year’s experience to remote and remain fully committed to providing them with an incredible experience — including virtual intern programming, events, and a leadership developmental speaker series. We’re looking forward to making it the most memorable summer as a CZI intern, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish!
