“On my very first day at Chick-fil-A, Inc., I attended an event and sat down at a table by myself because I didn't know anyone. And Dan Cathy, who was the CEO at the time, came and sat next to me. My first thought was, ‘Oh my gosh. I sat at a VIP table. I’m not supposed to be here.’ But he just wanted to learn about me. He asked me about my family, and I immediately started rattling off my resume. But he stopped me and said, ‘What can you tell me about you? Tell me about your family. Tell me about your interests. How can we make sure Chick-fil-A is a place that you want to stay?’ That left a lasting impression on me. “Growing up, I was one of those kids who had a computer in my room. My dad worked in technology, and all of us learned the basics of coding. I always loved customizing things. My online profiles were pristine: I wrote all the code myself to make sure they were beautiful. It's always just been something that I've associated with happiness, creativity and possibility. Some people can get discouraged, but in my mind, with tech, you can always fix it. It's never broken. In high school, I worked at a Chick-fil-A restaurant for two years as a cashier. When I graduated from college, that experience helped me land a consulting role testing in-restaurant technology, and I eventually came on staff as the leader of a team testing customer-facing applications. The technology that we're working on at Chick-fil-A, especially in Customer Technology Solutions, is really compelling and competitive. All of our customer-facing apps are built internally. We're definitely more Agile than a lot of software companies. And we do it at scale, which is rare to see done well. We do Agile planning quarterly, but we are delivering continuously. I started my Chick-fil-A journey in the Restaurant Development department. Now I’m a Senior Principal Development Lead, determining layout and plans for new restaurants and securing the permits and agreements needed to begin the construction process. Soon after I was hired, my wife and I launched our nonprofit. With support from the Chick-fil-A Foundation, we’ve held STEM conferences for more than 1,000 Atlanta public school students, who have heard from famous musicians and celebrities, as well as executives in the science, technology, engineering, arts and math space. Everyone who works at Chick-fil-A, Inc. receives paid time off to volunteer and give back. In the spirit of community, dozens of staffers have helped with our conferences since we launched our nonprofit.
