For two decades, the residents of Las Vegas Trail (LVT) in west Fort Worth have lived in a food and health care desert. The slow decline of the area since the 1993 closing of Carswell Air Force Base—once the economic anchor of the neighborhood—made the community vulnerable to poverty and crime. As a result, access to quality health care, nutritious food sources, safe community spaces and economic stability became a thing of the past. But the tide is turning. Today, the new neighborhood health center serving the Las Vegas Trail area opened its doors, bringing a fresh wave of safety, health and nutrition resources to Las Vegas Trail residents. We've joined forces with JPS Health Network, Tarrant County College Corporate Solutions, and Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County to not only provide training but also assist in securing employment opportunities with Cook Children's or JPS.
The new neighborhood health center serving the Las Vegas Trail area is more than just a health clinic. It’s a hub designed to connect the dots for healthy living, strong families and thriving communities. And nothing says community quite like gathering in the kitchen and whipping up a meal together. That’s the idea behind the health center’s Demonstration Kitchen. Outfitted with commercial-grade appliances, the kitchen is designed to welcome Las Vegas Trail residents to the table for cooking classes and nutrition counseling and education. It will be an interactive space, where guests can engage with one another while learning how to choose and prepare healthy meals on a budget.

Cook Children’s Neuroscience Research Center, led by Christos Papadelis, PhD, is the recipient of a $50,000 research grant funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the National Pediatric Rehabilitation Resource Center, also known as CPROGRESS, for a study mapping the brain’s response to robotic-assisted rehabilitation in children with unilateral cerebral palsy. “We are one of very few centers in the United States mapping changes in the brain as a result of robotic rehabilitation,” Dr. Papadelis said. “It’s not the rehabilitation by itself or the robotic system by itself, but it's the fact that we try to map the brain’s plasticity or what type of plasticity takes place in the brains of these kids in response to the rehabilitation.”

The story of Cook Children’s Medical Center – Fort Worth is as rich and enduring as that of the city it calls home. The medical center’s roots date back to 1918 when Fort Worth’s Camp Bowie thrived as a military training center, the Stockyards buzzed with livestock trade, and the city’s population hovered near 100,000. Through all of Cowtown’s transformations, Cook Children’s has risen to meet the needs of the moment—expanding its campus, evolving its technological capabilities, and adding services to improve the health and well-being of all children in its care. Today, Cook Children’s begins a new chapter in its 107-year history of hope and healing by breaking ground on the site that will soon see the rise of a new 760,000-square-foot patient care tower, currently referred to as the West Tower.
This week, Cook Children’s Health Care System opened the Cook Children’s Neighborhood Health Center, provided by The Happy Davis Foundation and the Texas Rangers at 6825 Manhattan Boulevard in east Fort Worth. It is Cook Children’s eighth Neighborhood Health Center (NHC), all of them located in areas throughout Tarrant County where access to care is most needed. These centers provide primary health care, well-being services and more to families living in areas where residents are met with multiple barriers to accessing care, including limited transportation, food insecurity, language or literacy barriers, and a lack of awareness of available resources. Last weekend, Cook Children’s hosted our annual Prom for patients at the Medical Center! Over 55 teens attended Prom Paradise to dance the night away with their friends. “The Cook Children’s network never fails to blow us away with the way they love, honor and celebrate teens who are different from their peers in more ways than one. They don’t just make these kids feel included-they make them feel seen, hear, valued and so deeply loved. And this year, they went above and beyond once again to create a night our girl and her friends will never forget!” – patient parent Thank you to everyone who made Prom possible! -Special thanks to Dunkin' Joy in Childhood Foundation for generously funding this event. -Fort Worth Zoo brought animals to create a WILD learning and photo opportunity. -Magnolia Hair Salon did hair and makeup to help everyone feel their best. -Texas Christian University’s BYX fraternity created a fun and inviting Prom atmosphere for all of our patients and their guests.
