Wow! What a team! During the work day, coworkers may give each other a pen, a stapler, or even a plastic fork for lunch, but one employee recently gave something much more valuable to a colleague. Ken Pefine gave his kidney to Matt Knowles. “It was a no brainer for me,” said Ken, a gas employee based in Somerville. Ken and Matt work together in our natural gas unit. They met nearly 14 years ago—now, they have a special bond. “Matt is a good person and empowering him was important to me. He’d already been through a lot and I just really wanted to help,” Ken added. The surgery was a success. What an amazing story!

Every year Amy Palumbo spends about 1,000 hours volunteering with the Farmington Community Chest. The nonprofit social services organization provides programs supporting basic human services, education and other social needs. “It’s such a great organization and provides a vital safety net for people in the community,” said Amy, a Revenue Requirements Analyst in Berlin. For the past 5 years, Amy has helped organize numerous services and programs that run the gamut, from services for the elderly, to giving out general college and vocational trade scholarships for students, and planning of outdoor movie nights. In honor of National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to recognize employees like Amy who empower their communities by going above and beyond.

“The best part about coaching little league is working with the kids and seeing their skills grow,” said Senior Forecast Analyst, Tim Kirchman. “By the end of the season you see a group of kids come together as a team and cheer for each other. That’s very enjoyable and gratifying.” Tim has been volunteering with Parkway Little League West Roxbury/Roslindale for the past two years. His 11-year-old son William also plays in the league. When Bill Shea isn’t up in a bucket truck or working on utility poles, he’s putting his energy into the Special Olympics – supporting his daughter Brie who’s an avid Special Olympian.
