Earth week continues with another great project from our Wastewater Discipline! Project Spotlight: West Hampton Beach Village Sewer System Collection & Conveyance Design, West Hampton Beach Village. In order to help mitigate the impacts of nitrogen and low dissolved oxygen on the water bodies surrounding West Hampton Beach, a sewer system was designed to collect and convey 60,000 gallons per day of sanitary wastewater generated in the Main Street business corridor to a wastewater treatment plant in Suffolk County. There has been a recurring red, brown, and rust tides in the surrounding bodies of water and has therefore been added to the List of Impaired Waters. Additionally, the area has a documented loss of native plant and shellfish species. A sewer system would help to improve water quality and revitalize local economy. This project is about to go into construction with James Vierling, P.E. and Michael O'Connor, EIT, LEED GA doing on-site construction administration. #earthweek #H2M #sewersystem #environmental #wastewater
This week H2M is celebrating #EarthWeek as well as #EarthDay! Today, we are spotlighting one of our sustainable wastewater projects. Project: Crescent Beach Contamination Remediation, City of Glen Cove. Crescent Beach, the smallest of the City of Glen Cove’s three public beaches, has been closed to the public since the summer of 2009 due to bacteriological indicators. H2M was tasked with providing cost-effective measures to remediate the beach’s contamination so it can be reopened to the public. H2M’s Wastewater and Civil departments are teaming up to design measures to mitigate the contaminated stormwater runoff from neighboring areas and to also design a regrading plan for the beach to eliminate stagnant water during low tide. A clogged culvert will be cleaned to restore tidal exchange and helix stormwater filters will also be installed to reduce coliform bacteria present in stormwater. H2M's Steve Hearl, P.E., LEED AP is working with Charlotte Kuhl, E.I.T from Melville’s wastewater team on this design. Thanks for helping to clean up Long Island’s beaches!
We can't think of a better way to start your weekend than introducing you to our next employee in our "Why I Love H2M" Series: Lucy Mieles! Lucy is a project accountant at H2M. She is responsible for the setup, maintenance, and general financial assistance of projects managed by our Civil Discipline. We asked Lucy what the best part of her day is at H2M and she told us, "The best part of my day at H2M is when I share a laugh with my teammates and we plan out our practical jokes on the Human Resources department." #H2M #WHYILOVEH2M #accounting #team #funatwork #careers

H2M architects + engineers completed Phase I & Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in Nassau County, NY for a potential purchaser. During the Phase I ESA, H2M identified a recognized environmental condition and historical recognized environmental condition, specifically a tetrachloroethylene spill at an adjoining drycleaner. H2M recommended a Phase II ESA to investigate potential risks. As part of the Phase II Environmental Site Assessment, H2M collected subsurface soil, soil-vapor, groundwater, and indoor and outdoor air samples to assess potential impacts to the target property.
