Our spine program at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, UT earned a rare "no findings" report from the Joint Commission in August! Many of the program’s processes were at an Advanced Certification level, according to the reviewer, who observed high levels of collaboration and a passion for patient care. She also praised the team’s great documentation, its culture of process improvement, and the way education is systematized. “This was my first experience with a Joint Commission survey,” said John Macfarlane, MD, associate medical director. “As I spent the day with the surveyor, I was in awe of our great team. The surveyor interviewed, quizzed, and questioned caregivers from each part of the spine patient’s journey—the pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care areas. Each caregiver spoke knowledgeably and passionately about the great care they provide for our patients. I’m grateful to be a part of this team and thank the team members for their ongoing contributions to our program.”

Our Youth Outreach Department recently organized an interactive presentation hosted by EKG services and Central Processing at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. Attendees included kids from Youth Works, a community program assisting youth ages 14-18 in pre-employment training and life skills development. Our Youth Outreach team works to inspire young people’s interest in pursuing healthcare careers, especially young people who have diverse backgrounds. The team partners with local schools and youth groups to give presentations for students about healthcare careers. More than 100 volunteers from more than 20 departments across Intermountain volunteered to help give presentations last year. #healthcarecareers #futureworkforce #joinus
We're proud to be named one of America's Best Employers in Utah! Forbes, in collaboration with market research company Statista, surveyed 70,000 employees working for businesses with more than 500 employees. A total of 1,382 employers were ranked from varying industries. Fair pay, safe working conditions, inclusive culture, remote work benefits, and diversity initiatives were among Forbes' criteria, and only 262 U.S. hospitals and health systems made the cut. #joinus #healthcarecareers
Surgical caregivers at Layton Hospital in Layton, UT fill an important role in the operating room, but when they have down time, they’re known to pitch in wherever they’re needed. Recently Kim, a certified surgical tech, completed the department’s task list early and knowing that the environmental services team was short on caregivers, she enlisted her coworkers Heidi and Jennie to help her clean the employee stairs. “We’re a smaller hospital so we don’t have a lot of extra staff,” says Jennie. “We try to do extra chores to help our hospital stay clean and have somewhere nice we can do patient care.” “Kim, Heidi, and Jennie may have been the few who were noticed at this time. However, we have a whole team that goes above and beyond,” says Shay Williams, manager of surgical services. “Having surgical services volunteer to help out shows we’re a team of one and we’re willing to help out in any way possible. There’s no job that’s below our caregivers. We may have different training, but we all want the same thing for our clients.”
As a part of our effort aimed to improve community health by addressing the social determinants of health, Intermountain Healthcare recently presented Cherish Families with a $25,000 gift. Cherish Families is a nonprofit organization helping individuals who have experienced difficulties associated with a plural marriage background to bridge societal gaps and build new connections, providing them with food, clothing, shelter, legal help, and mental health services. “Living the healthiest life possible requires more than access to high-quality healthcare,” says Paul Krakovitz, MD, Desert Region president. “We’ve found that supporting those in need has a positive impact on community health. We want to be part of helping those who have struggled with adverse circumstances to regain strength and the ability to succeed.” In addition to the $25,000 gift to Cherish Families, Intermountain donated $100,000 to help fund the Washington County Mental Health Receiving Center, $25,500 for the Doctors Volunteer Clinic, and $20,000 to Utah Tech University for diversity in healthcare scholarships.
