When you think about art museums, you don't usually think about math equations as the artwork. Our Craig Reynolds though is working to make the thought a reality by helping to create a mathematics museum that will expose children to the beauty and importance of math. Our Jack Korbitz, a financial analyst in Omaha, Nebraska, recently nominated his supervisor, Connor Johnson, for the Employers Support of the Guard and Reserve’s (ESGR) Patriot Award. Command Sgt. Maj. Scott Hansen and three representatives from the ESGR came to our Omaha office to present the award to Connor. The ESGR is a government program that was established to promote cooperation between employers and U.S. reservists concerning the latter’s military commitments. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support reservists through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. The chess world needs to make room at the top for our Maxwell Berube (right), who won the 2021 Maine State Chess Championship this summer, achieving an expert-level rating. Max, who is an actuary in our Portland, Maine, office, has studied chess on and off for 14 or 15 years, though he amusingly says he took a break while taking the actuarial exams because "those take a lot of time." According to ChessMaine, 46 participants from five different states competed July 16-18, 2021, in Waterville, Maine, making it the best attended state championship in almost a decade. It was a three-day tournament, five rounds, three to five hours each. Overall, Max scored 4.5 out of 5, which means he won four games and drew one, taking sole first place. With a rating of 2,011, Max sits at the number three position for top chess players in Maine. Congratulations, Max! (Photos: ChessMaine)
