DAYTON, OH - Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck announces that his office is expanding partnership with local colleges by welcoming The Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine into the Montgomery County Jail. This collaboration between the Jail, NaphCare and Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine is focused on increasing psychiatry services and comes at a time when the demand for mental health assistance has reached unprecedented levels. Per statistics reported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an estimated 44% of individuals in jails, experience mental illness. Through this partnership, psychiatry services from NaphCare will be increased with several fourth-year psychiatry residents working under the clinical direction of Dr. Brian Merrill. Dr. Merrill states, “This experience will broaden education by offering residents an opportunity to serve incarcerated individuals, while meeting a service need in the community. The hope is to expand this partnership so that additional Residency Training Programs or Medical Students can also join the treatment team.” This collaboration between the Montgomery County Jail, NaphCare and The Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine reflects a proactive approach to tackling mental health challenges within the criminal justice system. NaphCare is pleased to share a conversation with our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jeffrey Alvarez, MD, CCHP. Dr. Alvarez came to NaphCare in 2018 as a corporate physician, quickly advancing to Corporate Medical Director for Western States and, most recently, to the role of Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Alvarez became involved with the NCCHC in 2010 when he began working as a surveyor to help correctional facilities achieve and maintain NCCHC accreditation. Since then, he has taken on various leadership roles with the NCCHC, serving on the Board of Directors and helping amend and update the standards to remain current. NaphCare has completed its SOC 2 Type II audit, performed by KirkpatrickPrice. This attestation provides evidence that NaphCare has a strong commitment to security and to delivering high-quality services to its clients by demonstrating that they have the necessary internal controls and processes in place. A SOC 2 audit provides an independent, third-party validation that a service organization’s information security practices meet industry standards stipulated by the AICPA. During the audit, a service organization’s non-financial reporting controls as they relate to security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy of a system are tested. The SOC 2 report delivered by KirkpatrickPrice verifies the suitability of the design and operating effectiveness of NaphCare’s controls to meet the standards for these criteria. “NaphCare is committed to providing the highest level of security and internal controls to protect and safeguard our customer’s data and ensure the privacy of the patients we serve,” said Byron Harrison, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer of NaphCare. “Originally architected by NaphCare, the TechCare EHR and TechCareOnline platforms are the premier solutions for the correctional healthcare industry. Our in-house teams remain committed to maintaining our SOC 2 Type II compliance and providing the highest levels of service and security to our partners.” Read more at NaphCare.com.

Fulton County Chairman Robb Pitts and Commissioner (District 1) Bridget Thorne recognized members of NaphCare’s healthcare team with the Fulton County Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Endeavors for the Benefit of Fulton County Citizens. “I’m honored today to recognize this NaphCare team of healthcare heroes for going above and beyond to save lives during a serious incident at the jail. Thank you for putting your patients first,” said Chairman Pitts. Earlier this year, NaphCare’s medical team at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta responded to multiple, simultaneous medical emergencies and successfully saved many patients’ lives. In a single day, NaphCare's medical team responded to nearly a dozen medical emergencies with success. In one instance, the team received a call for assistance in treating a patient with a severe injury to a major artery. NaphCare's first responders acted swiftly and performed life-saving measures both before and during transport to the hospital. The same day, NaphCare's medical team received a second call for help. Upon arrival, they were met with the aftermath of a serious incident where several patients had been severely injured and required immediate medical attention. The NaphCare team quickly assessed the emergency in order to initiate rescue efforts. Despite the challenge of a high-tension situation, NaphCare's medical team remained focused and successfully rescued six individuals. Read the rest of the article at NaphCare.com.
NaphCare is pleased to share our conversation with Amber Simpler, PhD, ABPP, Executive Director of Behavioral Health Research for the NaphCare Charitable Foundation. Dr. Simpler joined NaphCare in 2019 as Chief Psychologist, collaborating with NaphCare’s mental health professionals to improve clinical and operational processes, establish jail-based competency restoration programs, develop standardized clinical guidelines for mental health, and assist with innovative initiatives like our Mental Health Stabilization Units. As she steps into her new role as Executive Director of Behavioral Health Research at the NaphCare Charitable Foundation, Dr. Simpler transitions from the clinical administrative world of forensic psychology into a research-focused career path. Within the next few years, she hopes to delve further into action-oriented efforts to better identify those in need of mental health support and, ultimately, disrupt the cycle of recidivism. With her leadership, the NaphCare Charitable Foundation will be contributing research to help create a future where the needs of incarcerated populations can be assessed, evidence-based treatment applied, and adverse outcomes minimized. To make this vision a reality, all research data, findings and tools will be open source – meaning data will be made public to further scientific research by other organizations and institutions.
