NaphCare is pleased to share our conversation with Amber Simpler, PhD, ABPP, Executive Director of Behavioral Health Research for the NaphCare Charitable Foundation. Dr. Simpler joined NaphCare in 2019 as Chief Psychologist, collaborating with NaphCare’s mental health professionals to improve clinical and operational processes, establish jail-based competency restoration programs, develop standardized clinical guidelines for mental health, and assist with innovative initiatives like our Mental Health Stabilization Units. As she steps into her new role as Executive Director of Behavioral Health Research at the NaphCare Charitable Foundation, Dr. Simpler transitions from the clinical administrative world of forensic psychology into a research-focused career path. Within the next few years, she hopes to delve further into action-oriented efforts to better identify those in need of mental health support and, ultimately, disrupt the cycle of recidivism. With her leadership, the NaphCare Charitable Foundation will be contributing research to help create a future where the needs of incarcerated populations can be assessed, evidence-based treatment applied, and adverse outcomes minimized. To make this vision a reality, all research data, findings and tools will be open source – meaning data will be made public to further scientific research by other organizations and institutions. NaphCare was recently named one of Birmingham’s 2023 Best Places to Work by the Birmingham Business Journal. NaphCare earned third place in the extra-large category (250+ employees) of employers. NaphCare, along with other local businesses, was honored at an event on Thursday, May 11, and recognized in The Best Places to Work issue of the Birmingham Business Journal. Best Places to Work is the Birmingham Business Journal’s program to recognize employers who have gone above and beyond to develop exceptional workplace cultures. Each year, the Birmingham Business Journal surveys employees at companies throughout the city to gather their thoughts and perspectives on workplace culture. Employee responses from the anonymous survey, along with the number of employees who respond to the survey, are calculated to identify a company’s overall score and ranking. This was NaphCare’s first year to enter the Best Places to Work award program. Jennifer Miller, NaphCare’s Chief of Human Resources, attended the event to recognize all finalists and was honored to receive the Best Places to Work award on NaphCare’s behalf. “Thank you to all our team members who participated in the 2023 Best Places to Work survey,” said Miller. “We appreciate your commitment to NaphCare’s mission – to improve and save lives. It is the commitment and dedication of our team members that led NaphCare to be recognized as a 2023 Best Place to Work."
