Phoenix Children’s has officially open our new and expanded neurodiagnostic sleep and EEG laboratory! This state-of-the-art laboratory includes 8 patient rooms, a family lounge and designated work areas for our clinical team — all specifically designed to improve comfort and care for children undergoing sleep studies, electroencephalogram and electromyography testing, and nerve conduction studies. With family-centered care being one of our core values, this new space reflects feedback we sought from members of our Patient Family Advisory Councils. They were able to see their suggestions come to life when they toured the facility before it opened. Learn more about the innovation and attention to detail that went into designing our new neurodiagnostic laboratory and read what our patient families have to say about our latest expansion project.

In a special Q&A session, two Phoenix Children’s leaders — Dr. Dana Williams, a pediatric gastroenterologist and medical director of patient experience (left), and Andréa Aken’Ova, director of patient and family centered care — share how they help ensure we provide a consistently exceptional experience at every encounter.

Yu and her mother, Kaitlyn, volunteer together at Phoenix Children’s Hospital – Thomas Campus, offering patient families, staff members and visitors comfort and kind words as they serve up warm cups of coffee, tea, cocoa, cider and snacks from our roaming coffee cart. When we asked Yu why she chose to volunteer with her mom at Phoenix Children’s, she said, “I love being able to spend time with my mom while also helping others. It is very rewarding. Here, I may be doing a very small thing, but I am contributing to the community.” This dynamic duo brings smiles to everyone they meet — and that’s a very big thing! We thank them both for making a significant impact on our community.

Melissa can’t help but smile big when she’s volunteering in the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units at Phoenix Children’s (also known as our PICU and NICU). It brings her such joy to be able to calm and soothe some of our smallest patients. With her clinical background, Melissa knows all too well the value healthcare volunteers bring. “Being a nurse, I have always been aware of the impact that volunteers have in a hospital. Volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of everybody at the hospital, and there is nothing better than knowing you have helped someone.”

David has served as a volunteer at Phoenix Children’s for 13 years … and counting! He currently volunteers in our Child Life Zone, and has also served in our cardiovascular intensive care unit. Having spent several months in a hospital as a child, David has a lot of empathy for our patient community and finds it very rewarding to help them feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stays. “Many times, patients thank me but I always thank them in return for allowing me to be there with them.”

After Jill retired from her professional career in a hospital setting, she knew she wanted to continue serving patient families in a volunteer capacity … and Phoenix Children’s was her first choice. As a volunteer float, she serves in many different areas of our Thomas Campus — from delivering gifts and spending time with patients at their bedside, to replenishing service carts and family lounges, assisting our clinical staff at patient discharge, and helping during hospital festivities. And she loves it all!

For Kajol, being a Phoenix Children’s volunteer runs in her family. She first learned about our volunteer opportunities from her sister. “My sister initially started volunteering at Phoenix Children’s and would tell me about how much she loved it. Now, I feel the same way!” Having now served for a year and a half, Kajol makes a positive impact on children by taking their minds off why they’re at our emergency department. “Even getting a child’s favorite toy and playing with them for a couple minutes makes a big difference.”
