Dr. Gary Kirkilas literally takes his pediatric office on the road via our Crews’n Healthmobile. With Dr. Kirkilas at the wheel, Phoenix Children’s 35 ft. mobile medical unit (MMU) offers free medical care to homeless and at-risk youth throughout the Phoenix Metropolitan area. In a 12-month period alone, our MMU has provided 5,117 medical visits and treated 1,583 patients in need.

Britney Frederic is one of Phoenix Children’s injury prevention program interns. She is majoring in healthcare coordination with a minor in healthcare innovation at Arizona State University, and will be the first in her family to graduate college. Having volunteered at Phoenix Children’s in the past and with sights set on a career in public health, Britney knew our internship was a perfect fit for her. Our program provides professional development and community outreach experiences for a wide range of safety initiatives.

Dr. Kathleen van Leeuwen has been named the associate surgeon in chief of Phoenix Children’s Hospital – East Valley, slated to open in 2023. Dr. van Leeuwen is recognized as an outstanding physician and surgeon and has been heavily involved in many aspects of our East Valley expansion. In her new role, she will be responsible for guiding our clinical team and ensuring our East Valley facility offers the same top-quality care families have come to expect from our health system.

Dr. Sarjita Shukla heads up Phoenix Children’s new integrative medicine program, that leverages conventional medicine and evidence-based complementary practices to promote healing and to help patients better manage their conditions. This healing-oriented medicine focuses on the whole child, including nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, mind-body and environment, and is effective in treating a wide range of pediatric health conditions.
