Our animal-assisted therapy (AAT) program has two full-time employed facility dogs, Checkers and Gertie. These facility dogs help clinicians make connections with the kids who are nervous or having a hard time opening up. Gertie (left) works alongside Rachel Magsam, facility dog handler and child life specialist. Gertie’s primary role is to help facilitate positive coping with patients at the hospital through building therapeutic relationships, play, emotional support, education, procedure support, and more. Checkers (right) works alongside Lisa Dykeman, Facility dog handler and rehabilitation technician. Checkers works in both our inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation centers and helps patients with anything the physical, occupational or speech therapists think would benefit the patient.

Phoenix Children’s opened a Sports Medicine and Urgent Care facility at Legacy Sports AZ's Bell Bank Park in Mesa. This state-of-the-art facility offers pediatric sports medicine for young athletes up to age 21 who are injured during play, as well as pediatric urgent care services for children and adolescents up to 18 years of age who are visiting the park and living in the East Valley.

In July 2022, Phoenix Children’s opened its Sports Physical Therapy – Peoria location. A new, fully equipped 8,000 sq. ft. space that enables our sports physical therapists to effectively treat everything from muscle pain, torn ligaments and overuse injuries, to fractures and traumatic injuries. Young athletes, ages 8 - 19, also have room to throw, hit, run and cross-train, with working space designed to help them return faster to the sports they love.

Dr. Mia Ratkiewicz, a pediatric pulmonologist at Phoenix Children’s, participated in the 2022 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Grand Canyon summer rim-to-rim hike to raise awareness and resources to benefit children with cystic fibrosis. This is yet another example of our providers’ personal commitment to advancing medicine and patient care.
