Employee Spotlight: Sandy Jacobs, School Teacher, 1 Darn Cool School. With the new school year back in full swing and the 1 Darn Cool School celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week, get to know one of our awesome school teachers, Sandy Jacobs. Sandy has been teaching Phoenix Children's patients for over 20 years after moving here from Mandan, North Dakota to "thaw out."
Congratulations to our Division of Endocrinology for receiving a Grant from the Thomas J. Beatson, Jr. Foundation to support a High Risk Type 1 Diabetes Management Program. Thomas Beatson was a Valley resident who lived with Type 1 Diabetes for almost 75 years. He was passionate about supporting others and working toward a cure. His legacy has now extended to families at Phoenix Children's. This Grant allows us to be more comprehensive and proactive in providing care to families who struggle Type 1 Diabetes. Educating the community and participating in research ensures our patients’ supply of life-sustaining insulin will not be interrupted by abrupt health care system changes.

Employee Spotlight: Joy MacLeod, Health Information Nurse, Emily Center For 25 years, Joy MacLeod has served families at Phoenix Children's doing what she loves best ... making sure families have the information they need to care for their children. And, after 25 years she still feels honored to be part of the cornerstone of health care at PCH. Ask her about her Richard Gere framed photo on her desk the next time you stop by the Emily Center!

The 2nd annual Trauma Conference International in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, recently brought together world-class trauma experts, including our own David M. Notrica, MD, FACS, FAAP, Trauma Medical Director, who was a featured speaker. Back at home at Phoenix Children's, our caregivers virtually attended the conference via a live simulcast - all in the name of learning and staying the best at treating your kids!
Employee Spotlight: Lori Wagner, Family Nurse Practitioner Lori Wagner came to Phoenix Children's as a registered nurse right out of nursing school. Now a nurse practitioner, she is celebrating her 25th work anniversary at PCH, inspired by her son to choose a career in hematology. Her manager, Carol Inman, said Lori is the coding queen, knowing it backwards and forwards and trains all of the new providers. Carol also teases that Lori has a "severe Type A personality condition."
Wow, what a great turnout at our recent Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children's Hospital Down Syndrome Symposium! Amazing speakers, audience interaction and lots of knowledge shared about the recent advances in the medical treatment of Down syndrome.
