National Nursing Assistants Week was celebrated June 12 - June 18. During this week, we honored the compassionate, dedicated NAs and CNAs who are vital to the care we deliver every day at UHS. From assisting patients with daily needs to bringing comfort when it’s needed most, their impact is felt across every corner of our hospitals. UHS Nursing Assistants share what makes their roles so rewarding—from strong teamwork and compassion to the growth opportunities that empower them to thrive. Kristal Button, NA, CVICU, UHS Wilson Medical Center shared, “We work together as a team, and we have each other’s backs. Teamwork makes the dreamwork.”
Story from UHS: Where compassion meets career: The life of a UHS nursing assistant
In response to challenges faced by nurses across New York, Mother Cabrini Health Foundation announced $51 million in funding for 13 hospitals across the state, and we are thrilled to announce that United Health Services is one of them! This generous grant will allow us to pursue accreditation through either the Magnet Recognition Program or the Pathway to Excellence Program from American Nurses Association. The nursing staff at our hospital will receive increased support in the face of workforce shortages and will allow us to implement virtual nursing and nurse residency programs. We are beyond grateful to be one of the recipients of this funding and are in great company among the other grantees. Together, we will all be able to strengthen New York’s nursing workforce and continue providing high-quality care to our communities.
UHS awarded significant grant to advance nursing excellence
At United Health Services, we remain committed to advancing patient care through Innovation—and the Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy program is a remarkable demonstration. This groundbreaking technology, launched in April 2024, is revolutionizing how we detect and treat lung cancer. With the recent milestone of 100 procedures completed, the Ion has already made a significant impact. Trevor Flanagan, Manager of Pulmonary Services, shared, “This has a huge impact on the community because it allows a service line that previously was not available. Last week, employees, senior leaders, and community members came together at UHS Senior Living at Ideal to celebrate the grand opening of the newest UHS Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation location with a ribbon cutting ceremony. This marks an exciting milestone as the facility officially opens its doors, offering top-tier physical and occupational therapy services to the community, with a special focus on geriatric care. The state-of-the-art facility features the latest in therapy technology to provide expert care. This expansion is a significant step forward for both UHS Physical Therapy and Senior Living at Ideal teams, who have worked hand-in-hand for years to bring this vision to life. Congratulations to everyone involved for making this new center a reality!

This milestone isn't just a number – it’s a testament to the expertise, dedication, and Trust we have built with our patients over the years. Dr. Alon Yarkoni, MD, FACC, Director of the UHS Structural Heart Program, the first in the Southern Tier to perform the TAVR procedure with his team, reflects on the growth of the program: “The TAVR program has been rewarding to direct and to watch it grow over the last ten years. It has helped many people in our community, and I am proud of our team for making this a successful program”. We are proud to share that the UHS Spine Surgery Program has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval! UHS is the first program in Upstate New York to earn The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval® for Core Certification in Spine Surgery by demonstrating continuous compliance with Joint Commission performance standards, placing the program among a select group of hospitals nationwide to achieve excellence in spine care. Under the leadership of Dr. Simone Betchen, MD, Chief of Neurosciences, UHS formed a dedicated multidisciplinary team, focused on enhancing patient satisfaction and improving patient education programs. The Gold Seal recognition highlights our commitment to provide high-quality, compassionate care to our community, combining advanced surgical technologies with a personalized approach.

Another milestone reached for the new front door to UHS Wilson Medical Center with Wilson Main Tower 5 officially opening and welcoming patients! A heartfelt thank you to each and every employee who worked so incredibly hard these past few weeks to ensure a seamless transition for our staff, our patients and our visitors. Because of you, the 5th floor is now a reality! Wilson Main Tower 5 will support oncology patients as they face their diagnosis in a tranquil and healing environment. This floor is dedicated to UHS’ Executive Vice President of Clinical Integration and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rajesh Davé for his decades-long service to UHS and the community.
