Base pay is not easy to compare to the civilian world without taking into account all the benefits.

Very accommodating for a single Officer living on his own. Although, I've met colleagues with a family of their own that struggle just as much as their civilian counter-part because of additional expenses accrued from gear purchases.

The worst thing about the Army's benefits package is that Congress can change it at any time.
