TLDR; a waste of time. Arrived there 8:50 I had to ring the bell a few times before someone let me in, despite there is a window where everybody could see me. While entering the CEO was leaving (I think I recognized him by the on-line photos), he heard me asking for HR manager and he just pointed me to his (empty) desk and told me to wait for him (!!). Another guy was waiting for HR manager to collect a pack so he kept asking around with nobody having a clue. Finally at 9:10 someone asked me why I was there again (third time!!) and decided to call the development manager that finally showed up telling me that actually HR manager was not in in the morning (he somehow arrived later and I then met him just before leaving but he told me he didn't have time to talk to me..) You can imagine my confidence in the company at this point considering not being so high anyway due to on-line reviews. We then started the interview where development manager talked for half an hour (it was 9:40 when I started the test) in a completely selfish way without even care if I was understanding or having already experience in what he was saying or anything to say at all. But the best part had had yet to come.. He gave me the test with 4 sections: code, javascript, c# and html. He told me he was not expecting me to complete the whole test, just to focus on the first one and do those one I am more comfortable/confident with. I've done the code part and I chose to do c# questions first finding quite difficult to concentrate as other people were talking in the room next door and you could hear them as there were no wall. The development manager came to collect my test and went away to check it: while before he was all smiling, now he came back very serious telling me that what I've done was all correct but asking me why I haven't done any javascript question (!!) and inquisitive asking if I knew Node and javascript and coming out with phrases like "if you don't know, just you say it" that for me it's quite annoying and rude. For me the interview finished there really, but I didn't say anything just to not be impolite and rude (conversely..) Yes, I noticed he was pushing me to explain what SOLID is but he should have recognized that there was no effort on my side at all to try it and just wanted the meeting to finish as soon as possible. (come on, read the facial expressions!) Last thing that annoying me more than everything is the judgemental comments about new technologies: node.js, typescript, AWS.. are NOT new technologies, they have been there for years and more people are starting using them so that's why they are quite popular nowadays but they are just TOOLS for building innovative ideas. I haven't heard anything new in development manager's long speech: they've just discovered microservices, I've been through similar migration 3 years ago and being using them since them!! An example of using new technologies in their sector is having and intelligent agent (like Amazon Echo) that using machine learning, it finds automatically a better provider for you and switches to it for you and when everything it's done it will just say "Hey, I changed the energy provider so now you save £20 more a month". That's just a glimpse of new technology!! Maybe I know where I "didn't convincingly demonstrate the passion for new technologies": I must admit my phone is not really cool but having the latest IPhone is not passion for new technologies: it's being a victim of consumerism mainly. I had one of the first Windows Phone in 2005 and develop on it early implementation of speech recognition, that could be considered a bit passion for new technologies. Now I code in my spare time on a Rasperry PI in Python to (try) to simulate Alexa/Siri/Cortana.. and I have the humility to not consider it the most innovative thing that can be done.. Interest in quantum computers for example and knowing how they work, IS new technology!
