Pros

The friends made who were on the same ship of misery as I was.

Cons

By far the worst big law firm that I ever worked at. The pay is far less than the market rate, the support staff seems worn down after probably being abused and left in fear for years, and the partners are as selfish and maniacal as one would expect from Big Law. Do not trust anyone at Shearman. It's a cut throat environment where they'll pull the rug out from underneath you at anytime. Each practice area has a ridiculously ambiguous review mechanism tool that they use to push employees (especially associates) away so they don't have to pay their bonus because their getting a fresh crop of financially overburdened new associates the following year. Don't rely on the fake glassdoor posts that HR probably paid people to leave on this page or the Shearman website filled with propaganda of growth and a sustainable future. For every Attorney that they bring into the firm at least three attorneys are laid off and left without a means to survive.

Mismanaged and Outclassed

Pros

-Located in New York City -Senior lawyers (and I mean the old guard) are very good -Now solicit upward feedback

Cons

The office itself is a disgusting mess, old and worn, with decades-old furniture (and an awful, teeny tiny cafeteria buried in the bowels of the building) Management seems to shoot from the hip, hiring and firing on a whim without regard for the long-term repercussions and without strategic thought as to the direction of the markets The firm is siloed like none I have ever seen. If you are in the X department, expect not to know or see anyone from any other department except for those few that you might interact with out of necessity (e.g., the specialists) The firm has lost its brand cachet, though they don't seem to acknowledge that fact There is a complete lack of cohesiveness to the firm, from the aforementioned siloed model to a lack of firmwide social events. Oh, and everyone keeps their door closed.

Pros

-Big Firm -Good reputation -Great location right next to the subway -Friendly people

Cons

-Lack of transparency. I was hired as a temporary employee and given a lot of responsibilities. I was under the impression from what they told me and how they acted that the role would most likely become permanent. However, I was replaced and let go the day before a big holiday. -I tried to email for references and didn't hear back from supervisors that I worked closely with for months and considered on very good terms with -Very low pay
